The third Knives Out movie will arrive on Netflix on December 12, two weeks after it receives a limited theatrical release. However, it's not called Knives Out 3, and is instead titled Wake Up Dead Man. While it might seem strange that Netflix isn't capitalizing on the name brand, there is a very good reason for it.

Wake Up Dead Man brings Daniel Craig back as Benoit Blanc, an eccentric private investigator with a penchant for flair and the skill to solve locked-door crimes alongside the likes of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. The new mystery follows a death surrounding a church, with a new Knives Out cast of high-powered stars.

Why Knives Out 3 Has A Different Title

The first movie in the series was called Knives Out, which was part of the story's theme about the death of a prolific crime author. The second movie, however, wasn't Knives Out 2, but was instead Glass Onion, which once again lined up with the main character in the film and his vacation home with a "glass onion" design.

At the time the movie was released, the movie's full title was Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, making its connection with the previous Benoit Blanc film explicit. However, this seems to have been primarily a marketing decision. After the movie's release, Johnson was public about his dissatisfaction with the subtitle.

"I’ve tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. I want it to just be called Glass Onion... The whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time."

This time around, marketing still remained a priority, and the full title of Johnson's new movie is Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. It's clear, however, that the director thinks of these projects like a series of mystery novels, and anyone looking for an early hint at the case to come is best off ignoring the Knives Out subtitle.

What Does Wake Up Dead Man's Title Mean?

While the second movie referenced in part what tech mogul Miles Bron (Edward Norton) named his home, it also had more significance. Rian Johnson named it after a Beatles song of the same name, and he even had the song playing in the end credits. (It's worth noting, Radiohead had a 2001 song called "Knives Out.")

His new Benoit Blanc movie is also named after a song: "Wake Up Dead Man" was a 1997 U2 song from the album Pop. However, naming the movie after a song was only part of the deal for Glass Onion, so there is likely to be something tied into the narrative for this title as well.

In the U2 song, Bono sings to Jesus Christ, and asks for guidance and direction. The movie Wake Up Dead Man takes place in a church where Blanc has to solve another murder. With the church's ideas of resurrection and two priests involved, it is certain to play into those religious themes, while keeping the music reference alive.
