Despite network TV's 2025-2026 cycle now in full swing, the broadcaster has saved two of its most successful scripted series to the midseason. Both The Rookie season 8 and Will Trent season 4 aren't set to premiere until the first week of January, which admittedly is a bit of a wait.
This isn't new for ABC, as it has previously pushed those aforementioned shows to a winter premiere, where they did impressively well in terms of ratings. However, while The Rookie season 8's delay may very well be worth it due to the number of surprises in store for viewers, the same may not be the case for the Atlanta-based procedural. This doesn't mean that Will Trent season 4's quality will be bad, things might not be ideal for certain characters.

By the end of Will Trent season 3, it was revealed that Angie was pregnant with Seth's baby. While this isn't a death sentence to her and Will's romantic chances in the future, it makes their situation more complicated because they will have to consider the well-being of the baby and the involvement of Seth in all of this. That said, the lack of confirmation about Scott Foley's return in Will Trent season 4 is concerning.
Regardless, however, a bigger indication that the ABC procedural has no plans of bringing them back together comes from Will's side of the story. Per Matt Webb Mitovich's Matt's Inside Line, executive producers Liz Heldens, Daniel Thomsen and Karine Rosenthal have revealed that:
"Two familiar faces will be resurfacing in Will’s life. Both think highly of Will, both have impulse control issues to varying degrees, and both will play ongoing roles in his life throughout the season."
Whoever these surprise returns are, it signifies that Will Trent is planning to develop Will's story beyond his ties to Angie. One could argue that season 3 attempted to do it with Marion's arrival, but her role was still romance-focused, whereas this may not be the case to the aforementioned characters that the Will Trent executive producers are teasing.

After their unfortunate incident in the Will Trent season 2 finale, Will and Angie's relationship has never been the same. Both were hesitant to even reconnect, unsure of how to approach each other following the traumatic incident. That said, the pair still continued to be tied to each other, as they remained each other's default support person — even when they were dating other people.
In Will Trent season 4, that needs to change. While their relationship is strengthened by their history, it's also no secret that they are bonded by trauma. At this point, it's everyone's guess if ABC is planning to reunite them as a romantic couple. For context, Will ends up with Sara Linton in the novels — a character who has yet to debut on the small screen. If the network diverts from Karin Slaughter's novels, however, it's very important that both Will and Angie deal with their individual issues first separately before even attempting to get back together.
