Try something different:

Give me a lighthearted recap
Lucas Bravo has had some choice words about his Emily in Paris character, and the show would do well to listen as it heads into its fifth season. In the hit Netflix rom-com series, Bravo plays Gabriel, an attractive chef who happens to be Emily's neighbor when she moves to the City of Love. Though he's initially dating Camille, Gabriel finds himself in a love triangle with her and Emily.
This isn't the only love triangle Gabriel is part of in Emily in Paris, as both he and English businessman Alfie found themselves vying for Emily's affections at one point. Most recently, Emily in Paris' season 4 finale sees Emily moving to Rome for work while also embarking on a romance with Marcello. Gabriel is desperate to win her back, and therein lies the series' biggest problem.
Lucas Bravo Said That Gabriel "Slowly Turned Into Guacamole" In Emily In Paris
Though many actors would be thrilled to have such a plum role in a successful series, Lucas Bravo has expressed disappointment with the way Gabriel has evolved — or devolved — throughout Emily in Paris. In a candid interview with Indiewire in 2024, Bravo said,
The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take. I’ve never been so far away from him.
In Season 1, there was a lot of me in him. But as they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him.
Bravo went on to express doubts about wanting to return to the show for Emily in Paris season 5, and stated that his contract was up in season 4. Of course, it has since been confirmed that Bravo will indeed reprise his role for the fifth season, though an US Weekly source has reported that "he’s just organically not as big a story this season."
This is in line with Emily in Paris season 5's teaser-trailer, which Bravo is completely absent from. In his interview with Indiewire, Bravo confessed, "I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self." And this may very well be the key to season 5's success.
Emily In Paris Needs To Bring The Spark Back To Gabriel's Character For Season 5 To Work
As popular as the "sexy chef" Emily in Paris character is, Bravo has a point that Gabriel is somewhat passive, being tossed into one love triangle after another. While the show often makes it seem like Emily and Gabriel are endgame, as they can't ever quit each other, Emily's other recent love interests, Alfie and Marcello, have been much more dynamic.
If Gabriel is traveling to Rome to win Emily back, then it's absolutely crucial that he return to his charming, vivacious self — the one Bravo misses so much. The sheer volume of love triangles in Emily in Paris is growing stale, so if we're going to be having yet another one in season 5, it can't involve a listless, bored actor playing a "guacamole" character.
However, this may be an uphill battle, as Lucien Laviscount is confirmed to be reprising his role as Alfie. Alfie is far and away the most charismatic of Emily's suitors, and arguably the person she belongs with the most. Even if we do get a peppier Gabriel, there's every chance Alfie will outshine him.
If Paris is the City of Love, it looks like Rome is about to become the City of Heartbreak in Emily in Paris season 5. I just hope that all the romantic drama isn't just a rehashing of past love triangles, whether they involve Gabriel or not.
