As Marvel's Weapons of Armageddon event sees Wolverine take up Captain America's shield, Logan is getting a lot of credit for the historic upgrade. But for fans of the X-Men franchise, it's a reminder that Wolverine's longtime rival on the team got there first...
Wolverine Will Claim Captain America's Shield for 'Weapons of Armageddon'

Recently, Marvel revealed details for Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, a new series that will lead into the upcoming Armageddon event. In this miniseries from Chip Zdarsky and Luca Maresca, Logan will investigate the PrimeWarrior corporation and its ties to Weapon Plus - the organization that span out of the Super-Soldier program and empowered characters including Wolverine, Luke Cage, Fantomex, Weapon H and Nuke. Indeed, Wolverine will clash with the latter, who is PrimeWarrior's newest enforcer.
Fans don't yet know how Wolverine will claim Captain America's shield, but given that Logan and Steve Rogers have investigated Weapon Plus together before, it's believable that Cap would surrender his weapon to aid Logan's investigation. As impressive as it is for Logan to pick up Cap's shield, another longtime X-Men didn't just take the weapon, but became Steve Rogers' mutant successor.

Wolverine Is Taking Cap's Shield, But Cyclops Did It First
x-men's cyclops becomes captain america 3
The X-Men hero in question was Scott Summers' Cyclops, who took up the mantle in Ultimate X-Men/Ultimate Fantastic Four Annual #1 (Aron Coleite, Joe Pokaski, Dan Panosian and Mark Brooks.) Hailing from a future timeline of the alternate Earth-1610, Scott was one of several heroes who lost their powers due to an experiment carried out by Reed Richards (a younger version of the hero who went on to become the villainous Maker.) Another victim was Steve Rogers, who died when his Super-Soldier biology was nullified.

In this dark timeline, Magneto's Ultimatum attack killed the Human Torch, leading his sister Susan Storm and friend Ben Grimm to begin an anti-mutant crusade. With mutants being locked up in the Invisible Woman's gulag, the X-Men took on a role as freedom fighters, with Cyclops adopting the Captain America identity as a warrior for freedom. While Scott wielded Cap's shield, he also wore a yellow and blue version of his costume, replacing his 'A' logo with 'X' imagery, but keeping the codename. Eventually, the team went back in time to try and kill a teenage Reed Richards, ultimately averting their dark future.
Even More X-Men Have Wielded Captain America's Shield

Even Cyclops and Wolverine aren't the only heroes to wield Captain America's shield. In the far future, Cable discovers and wields the shield for years, to the point that he considers it his when he re-encounters it in the modern day. Recently, yet another X-Men leader took up Captain America's shield - New Mutants' Dani Moonstar took not just the shield but leadership of the Avengers in the Age of Revelation tie-in X-Vengers.

While it may seem unusual for so many mutants to have taken up Cap's shield, the symbolism is obvious - a persecuted minority seizing the ultimate symbol of liberty and resistance. However, in Wolverine's hands it means something different, representing the beginning of Weapon Plus and the legacy of cruelty and dehumanization carried out in the name of creating the next Captain America - and hopefully, as Logan charges into battle, its end.
Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 is coming February 2026.
