Jujutsu Kaisen Just Solved a Major Gojo Mystery That’s Haunted the Anime

Gojo is inarguably Jujutsu Kaisen's biggest character. With his ridiculous powerset and cool demeanor, there's just something magnetic about the series' strongest sorcerer. Ever since he was sealed away in the Prison Realm during Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, fans have wondered what that's been like. Now, the character's English voice actor has presented a theory that fits Gojo perfectly.

At Anime Pasadena, ScreenRant caught up with Gojo actor Kaiji Tang and asked him about what Gojo is doing while trapped in the Prison Realm during season 2 and presumably throughout most if not all of season 3. Having a good laugh at the question, Tang speculated that Gojo's doing just fine in the Prison Realm.

Honestly? He’s probably doing better than the rest of us. (Laughs) He doesn’t have to pay rent in there, you know? I like to imagine he’s got a little home gym set up, maybe a meditation corner. I think he’s fine — living rent-free and stress-free.

Tang appears to be mostly joking with his response, and though the anime may change things around, it's pretty clear that the Prison Realm is far from a relaxing vacation.

According to an interview with series creator Gege Akutami, (translated and posted on X by user @soukatsu_), the Prison Realm is a place where time essentially doesn't flow. As a result, things such as hunger and thirst aren't as much of a concern.

What is a concern, however, is the mental strain of being completely and totally isolated. Prolonged solitary confinement is already regarded as a form of torture, and the Prison Realm is significantly worse than that.

Akutami says that Gojo's primary task during his stay in the Prison Realm is to keep his head completely empty so that he doesn't lose his mind during imprisonment. Unfortunately, there's not much else Gojo can do in the Prison Realm, which is part of what makes it such a nasty trap.

That being said, there are hints in the manga that Gojo's time in the Prison Realm was at least partially productive, so it's possible that Tang's joke was more accurate than it initially appears.

As horrific and potentially unnecessary as the Prison Realm is, it does make sense considering it was created by Akutami to imprison Gojo. Akutami famously grew tired of Gojo, so it's possible he designed the Prison Realm to be so torturous as a way of getting back at his own creation.

Unfortunately, whatever the reality of Gojo's experience in the Prison Realm, it's probably not quite so rosy as Tang made it out to be. Given Gojo's cool attitude throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, however, it wouldn't be surprising to hear him lie and say he had a great vacation.
