This new structure will mimic the Emmy-winning drama, with a season consisting of an annual release containing 15 episodes and produced with a "modest budget." According to HBO, this new structure hasn't been done before, and The Pitt has shown that this new form of storytelling will not only bring success but also pose a creative challenge.
In a recent report, HBO Boss Casey Bloys spoke about the new programming strategy during an HBO press presentation in New York. He stated that The Pitt's success provided useful information about where to go in the industry, as it's constantly shifting. But he also noted that producing any type of story, including ones for this new production model, needs to be set up from the start. He also claimed that HBO's new production model is something "not many people have been trained with" and requires a different set of skills to produce a compelling story in that structure.
"You have to set up, first, a world that generates the story, and you also have to work with people who know how to do that. It is a different skill generating 15 episodes of compelling stories, as opposed to crafting eight to 10, and over the last 10 to 15 years, not as many people have been trained in it."
HBO has announced that two more shows have been greenlit to follow this new 15-episode production structure: American Blue, from Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver, and a family drama called How To Survive Without Me (working title). Additionally, HBO has other dramas lined up that will be created under this new model. Not all shows on HBO will follow this new structure, such as the upcoming Harry Potter series, and HBO believes that shows under this model would complement its existing catalog.
HBO's New Structure Could Fix This One Problem With Streaming
Another reason HBO is moving towards a new model is that it allows shows to return annually. In the current streaming model, popular shows can take years to develop, as streamers decide whether to resume a program. For example, Wednesday had a three-year gap between seasons, and the same can be said of Stranger Things' recent seasons. With HBO's new production model, they're hoping to bring audiences back to consistency, knowing they can catch a new season annually, at the same time, same place, without long wait times, and guaranteeing they can find out what happens next.
"That's one of the reasons I was so thrilled that The Pitt worked and that it's coming back; the annual return is really, really important. I think as an industry, we've gotten away from that, and my hope is for something like The Pitt, we aired it in January [2025], it's coming back in January [2026]. That kind of habitual viewing, not only week to week but on an annual basis, is really important in terms of setting habits. I was thrilled not only that it worked, that it won the Emmy on top of that was just cherry on top.”
The Pitt is available to stream on HBO Max. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on January 8, 2026. Follow Collider to stay updated.
