Ever since Nosferatu cast a spell on the audiences worldwide, Robert Eggers' fans have been eagerly waiting for him to tackle a new beast in his upcoming project, Werwulf. The gothic horror led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson has all the dark elements that Eggers is known and loved for, promising a period piece with the director's frequent on-screen collaborators, a lot of blood, and an emotional core. While most details about the project are kept tightly under wraps, fans have their first look behind the scenes at Taylor-Johnson as the titular character.
A new set video released by TMZ shows Taylor-Johnson and the filming crew in Dartmoor, a national park in the southwest of the United Kingdom. The Kraven actor is seen pacing in the wilderness outside a hut, his long locks in the wind, beard covering his face, and ample blood covering his neck and chest. It's not a reach to assume it’s a scene of the morning after his transformation, but it's anyone’s guess. Nonetheless, by the looks of the video, fans can expect a feral, intimidating, and bloodied creature when the movie arrives.
What To Expect From ‘Werwulf’
Eggers is a unique filmmaker with an inimitable style. His body of work speaks for itself, with movies like The Northman, Nosferatu, The Witch, and The Lighthouse, and he has established himself as the master of modern horror. While plot details are scarce, Werwulf is set in 13th-century England and will use Old English, just like his other project, The Witch. Eggers previously hyped the movie by revealing:
"It's a medieval werewolf movie. And it's also the darkest thing I've ever written. By far."
Indeed, if Werwulf is the director’s darkest movie, one can expect it to feature all kinds of body and psychological horror, not just a creature feature. The movie marks Taylor-Johnson’s second collaboration with Eggers, post Nosferatu, but this isn’t the first time he is playing a feral role, given Sony’s R-rated Kraven also sees him getting dark and bloodied. Also starring are Taylor-Johnson’s Nosferatu co-stars Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe, who have been in almost all Eggers projects. Another long-time collaborator in the cast is Ralph Ineson. Eggers co-wrote the script with Sjón, who also co-wrote the screenplay for Eggers' 2022 Viking epic saga The Northman.
Werwulf will be released in theaters on Christmas Day 2026. You can check out the new video above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the horror feature.
