HBO has announced that the Lanterns TV series, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, will be releasing sooner than expected. While the show is still scheduled for 2026, a new release date will be announced later. Lanterns was first announced in 2024 and will be based on the DC superhero and Justice League member, Green Lantern. It will follow John Stewart (Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Chandler) as these intergalactic cops investigate a murder, which leads them into a darker mystery.
Movieweb reported that the announcement was made during HBO's presentation in New York, where HBO's Casey Bloys confirmed that Lanterns is "eyeing an end of summer 2026 debut," meaning it will no longer come out around the same time as Supergirl, which is scheduled to hit theaters in June 2026. As of writing, a new release date has not been shared.
The Lanterns TV series is said to contain eight episodes and will be part of DC's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Alongside Chandler and Pierre, Lanterns also stars Nathan Fillion reprising his role as Guy Gardner, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Nicole Ari Parker, The showrunner for the DC series is Chris Mundy, who's known for his work on True Detective, Criminal Minds, Ozark, and Cold Case.
Lanterns isn't the only DC TV show that's going to be detective-based. Recently, it was announced that there will be a Superman TV spin-off featuring Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen, and that it will be akin to a true crime docuseries. An official title and release date have yet to be announced.
'Lanterns' Isn't The Only DC Project That's Facing Delays
'The Brave and the Bold'Image via DC Studios
Ever since James Gunn rebooted the DCU, DC Studios has been busy with numerous projects, especially after Superman found box-office success. From there, multiple shows and films are either in production or in early stages of development. However, one project that was first announced back in 2023 and is currently taking longer to develop is The Brave and The Bold, an upcoming Batman film that The Flash's Andy Muschietti will direct. The director revealed that the project has been postponed, and as of writing, no one has been cast to play either Bruce Wayne or Damian Wayne. So far, details about the feature have not been shared, and Gunn has clarified on social media that any update is most likely to be made up.
Lanterns is scheduled to come out in 2026. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
