Smith is widely respected for his recruiting ties and player relationships, holds one clear advantage over several external candidates that he’s available now. Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz and James Madison’s Bob Chesney remain in the midst of late-season pushes, limiting when they can meet with Penn State officials.
Smith’s candidacy comes as the school recalibrates following a surprising twist in the search. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule and Texas A&M coach Mike Elko have both signed extensions with their respective schools.
