Give me a lighthearted recap
A masterpiece in the thriller genre sadly reached its end six years ago after lasting for four nearly perfect seasons, but Apple TV's upcoming cyberpunk book adaptation could be its perfect replacement.
Almost 10 years ago, an incredible TV series premiered with one of the most compelling pilot episodes of all time. After delivering a brilliant hook, the show went on to become even better with each episode. All these years later, it still boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%, and its impact on television still lingers.
Unfortunately, like all good things, the show eventually had to end its run. Many still believe it was one of the best things that happened to television and hope for its revival. Although its return seems uncertain for now, Apple TV's exciting new sci-fi show could fill the void it left behind.
A Decade After Its Release, Mr. Robot Remains A Timeless Masterpiece

Mr. Robot was the first TV show Sam Esmail directed, wrote, and co-produced at the same time. Even though it marked his foray into television as a showrunner, Mr. Robot's storytelling displayed traces of genius that can rarely be found in debuts. What initially started as a grounded tale of a lonely hacker's fight against corporate corruption soon took a darker, psychological turn that left no dull moments.
As the show expanded its socio-political vision and became a solid critique of corporate greed, late capitalism, and economic inequality, it became evident that it was more relevant for the times than most other thriller series on TV. It also hit viewers on a personal level and triggered changes in them with its hard-hitting portrayal of the main character's struggles with isolation, clinical depression, and social anxiety.
After winning two Golden Globe Awards and three Primetime Emmy Awards, Mr. Robot finally reached its natural conclusion in 2019 with its fourth installment. Even though it ended on a strong note, it is hard not to miss it even to this day because of how artistically ambitious and culturally relevant it was.
It would be fair to say that no other show can replace Mr. Robot. However, a new Apple TV series can ease the pain of its absence.
Apple TV’s Neuromancer Can Fill The Void Mr. Robot Left Behind
Neuromancer Book Cover
Based on William Gibson's seminal novel of the same name, Apple TV's Neuromancer could become the streaming service's next big sci-fi series. Like Mr. Robot, it will center on a hacker named Case, who will be thrust into the world of high-stakes corporate espionage. With this, like Mr. Robot, the show will critique big corporations and how capitalism only increases economic inequalities.
Like E Corp from Mr. Robot, Neuromancer will also have a mega corporation, the Tessier-Ashpool family/conglomerate, as its overarching antagonist. At the same time, by featuring a world riddled with AI, Neuromancer will also dabble with similar ideas surrounding the nature of identity and its evolving meaning in a hyper-connected future.
Neuromancer's production is already in full swing, and it is expected to premiere on Apple TV in 2026.
Not to mention, Sam Esmail has previously likened Mr. Robot to The Matrix, which was deeply influenced by William Gibson's Neuromancer. With so many intriguing overlaps between the two, Apple TV's Neuromancer could be seen as the perfect spiritual sci-fi successor to Mr. Robot if it does justice to its source material and becomes as successful as the Sam Esmail political thriller.
