Wicked: For Good has shattered numerous records with its huge global debut. The follow-up to 2024's Wicked adapts the second act of the original Broadway musical depicting the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked: For Good release kicked off on November 21, almost exactly a year after the November 22 debut of the previous record-breaking installment.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Wicked: For Good is projected to earn a global opening weekend of $226 million, comprising $150 million in the domestic marketplace and an additional $76 million from 78 international markets.
This simultaneously gives it the biggest opening weekend ever for an adaptation of a Broadway musical globally, domestically, and internationally. It surpasses the previous records set by the original Wicked, which had a $114 million domestic debut and a $50.2 million international debut for a global debut of $164.2 million.
This $226 million total means that Wicked: For Good has taken just three days to become the 19th highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far. It has already outgrossed a wide variety of major releases, including One Battle After Another ($201.2 million), Freakier Friday ($153.2 million), 28 Years Later ($151.3 million), and Black Phone 2 ($129.5 million).
It remains to be seen how high 2025's Wicked: For Good can climb by the end of its run. However, it is well on its way toward becoming a major smash hit. For instance, it has already earned back its reported $150 million budget and is well on its way toward passing its estimated break-even point, which is likely around $375 million.
Because theaters keep half of ticket sales and production budgets don't account for advertising costs, big-budget studio movies tend to need to earn back two and a half times their budgets.
Wicked: For Good reviews have been more subdued than the 2024 movie's, earning it a Rotten Tomatoes score of 70% compared to the original's Certified Fresh 88%. However, this may not prove to be a stumbling block for the new movie if it maintains its strong word of mouth. It just earned an A CinemaScore, matching Wicked's own A, indicating that audiences have the same level of appreciation for both movies.
If it maintains its current trajectory ahead of the original movie, Wicked: For Good could eventually climb to a worldwide total of $1.044 billion by the end of its run. This would make it the second highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far (behind Ne Zha II) and the seventh highest-grossing musical of all time.
