Beginning December 1, Netflix subscribers will have the chance to see one of Leonardo DiCaprio's funniest roles when The Wolf of Wall Street begins streaming in the U.S. In an acting career spanning nearly four decades, the actor has delivered some truly outstanding performances. From What's Eating Gilbert Grape to Titanic and The Wolf of Wall Street, the star has shown a wide range over the years. However, many of his roles can be dark and intense, something he has actively worked against with some movies. The Wolf of Wall Street is one of his numerous collaborations with Martin Scorsese, where DiCaprio has entirely unadulterated fun playing the lead character, Jordan Belfort. The dramedy was a hit, grossing over $390 million globally, scoring a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and spawning numerous iconic social media memes and reactions.
The Wolf of Wall Street deals with a serious topic: fraud in one of the world's most important institutions. However, everything is tackled through humor, which can alienate some viewers. This is what happened with Collider's Matt Goldberg when he reviewed the movie in 2013. He noted that DiCaprio shines in the comedic role, and that if the film had been billed as a pure comedy, it could have been a "slam-dunk" success. He explained his gripe with it:
"The Wolf of Wall Street tries to hold the contradiction of both celebrating and condemning capitalism, but ultimately creates a sense of ambivalence. The story eventually becomes a blur where nothing comes together other than the standard inevitable downfall, where the protagonist must suffer negative repercussions of his wrongdoings. In 2013, that's a nice sentiment — that someone who perpetrates a massive fraud actually has to pay for his crimes — but there's not much space in The Wolf of Wall Street for sentimentality or insight, even though there always seems to be room for more hookers and blow."
What Is Leonardo DiCaprio Working on Now?
The star is fresh off starring in another blockbuster, One Battle After Another. In the action-thriller directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, DiCaprio plays Bob, a washed-up revolutionary. The film was a critical and box office success, scoring 94% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes from 410 critic reviews. It grossed over $200 million internationally, making it Anderson's highest-grossing movie to date. DiCaprio is next expected to star in Michael Mann's Heat 2, the sequel to his 1995 heist thriller. Production is scheduled to begin next year when all roles are cast.
Stream The Wolf of Wall Street when it becomes available on Netflix on December 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
