Over the years, the tech giant has been associated with acclaimed projects such as Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and the groundbreaking sci-fi series Severance. This year alone has seen Apple deliver Pluribus, the remarkable new show from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, and the theatrical blockbuster F1, starring Brad Pitt. But, it's now also home to The Family Plan 2, an action-comedy sequel that is designed to satisfy nobody on the planet besides the folks that enjoyed the first film, which debuted only two years ago. And as can be seen from the streamer's viewership charts, this target audience is admittedly quite large.
Not only did The Family Plan 2 become the number one film on Apple across the globe, it also pulled its predecessor up to the number two spot. According to FlixPatrol, the first film had actually started witnessing a spike in interest a few days prior to the sequel's debut on Friday. The movies are headlined by Mark Wahlberg, who plays a secret assassin daylighting as a suburban car salesman, and Michelle Monaghan, who plays his wife. While the first film mostly dealt with the protagonist's secret identity being revealed to his unsuspecting family, the sequel takes the action all the way to Europe. It features Kit Harington as the antagonist, and is directed by Simon Cellan Jones, who also directed the first film.
'The Family Plan 2' Holds a Terrible Rotten Tomatoes Score
Neither of these movies has been particularly well-received by critics, despite their obvious success with audiences. The Family Plan holds a 29% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, while the sequel is currently sitting at a 15% score on RT. In his review, Collider's Nate Richard described The Family Plan 2 as a "disposable Christmas movie," and added, "Despite having a slightly different premise from the original, much of the film plays out like a sitcom. Yes, it's an improvement over the first movie, that's not saying much when your predecessor was already lackluster." You can watch both The Family Plan and The Family Plan 2 on Apple TV, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
