As we inch closer to 2026, excitement continues to build for the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Scheduled for release in theaters on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey looks to be the most ambitious Nolan project yet, which is saying something considering the breadth and depth of this visionary director's previous work. Set to feature a star-studded cast, including the likes of Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal, The Odyssey is led by Matt Damon, with the two having recently collaborated on the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.
Ahead of the pair's latest movie, viewers are heading back in time to their first project, as the decade-defining Interstellar officially becomes a hit once again. At the time of writing, Interstellar is one of the most-watched movies on the iTunes charts, a list currently topped by director Paul Thomas Anderson's sure-fire Oscar hit, One Battle After Another. Interstellar was also a success at the Academy Awards, although it only walked away with one prize, winning Best Achievement in Visual Effects whilst missing out on four other nominated categories, including a snub for Hans Zimmer's score. The film's legacy has only grown over a decade later, with its 73% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes not fully representative of Interstellar's genius. The synopsis for the movie reads:
"In Earth's future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth's population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind's new home."
Was 'Interstellar' a Box Office Hit?
Anyone who takes even a hint of interest in Nolan's filmography will be sure of Interstellar's box office success, but just how well did it perform? On a reported budget of $165 million, the movie nearly quadrupled this investment with a global haul of $641 million to date. Split between $203 million in domestic revenue and a further $438 million from overseas markets, the film was one of the highest-grossing of 2014, although it just missed out on the end-of-year top ten by one place, thanks to the $646 million earned by Big Hero 6.
Interstellar is an iTunes hit. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
