Forward Kyle Edwards says Northampton Town are looking to go all the way in the EFL Vertu Trophy after reaching the last 16 for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

Edwards and Tyrese Fornah both scored their first goals for the Cobblers as they beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Sixfields on Tuesday.

Northampton lost to eventual winners Peterborough United at the first knockout stage of the competition 12 months ago.

"We're in good form at the moment and, for us now, this competition is very important," Edwards told BBC Radio Northampton.

"We want to go as far as we can, we want to win and I don't see why we can't. Keep the form going, keep (going) in the league, keep in the cup and hopefully we'll go on for a long time."

The 27-year-old joined the Cobblers in the summer on a short-term deal after leaving Stevenage but has yet to establish himself as a regular, with just one league start so far.

"Everyone wants to score goals, it's the best feeling in football - I know Ty feels the same - and hopefully there's many more to come," Edwards added.

Fornah has been a more frequent part of boss Kevin Nolan's plans, with 23 appearances so far, but he was relieved to break his duck with their second goal against Wycombe.

"It's what I'm judged on, goals and assists - stats are a big thing in this day and age now, so I want to get more goals for this club," Fornah said.

Northampton, out of the FA Cup after a first-round defeat at Oldham, have a free weekend ahead before returning to action at home to Huddersfield Town on 9 December, four days before the first Nene derby of the season at Peterborough.

"We worked our socks off in the summer to build this squad and I believe in it," said Nolan, whose side have won four of their past five games in all competitions.

"We're going to have some tough days but at the moment I'm really pleased because we're matching teams that have budgets that are astronomical compared to ours."

One negative for Northampton was the loss of defender Jordan Willis in the second half against Wycombe because of a knee injury.

"He's a really valuable member of the squad, being captain in all the games in this competition, and there was no reason to risk him because we want him available for next Tuesday, and the week after, and the week after that, we've got a lot going on," Nolan added.
