Give me a lighthearted recap
Netflix has quite a few exciting offerings this weekend, and I believe the perfect weekend binge comes from a mix of a film set to leave the streamer soon, a new arrival, and an important refresher ahead of a sequel. Last week's list included an original animated movie, a horror film, and an action movie starring Dwayne Johnson, aka the Rock.
This time around, the best movies on Netflix for your weekend binge are two that are lighter in tone, allowing audiences to take a breather after the emotional first entry on the list. 2025's Netflix movies include some big Oscar contenders, and I believe the perfect way to start the weekend couch session is with one of them.
3 Train Dreams (2025)
Train Dreams released on Netflix today, November 21. As one of the streaming service's newest releases, audiences should consider checking this powerful story out during its first weekend on the streamer. The movie stars Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, a railroad worker who faces quite a few challenges as the world changes around him faster than he can reckon with.
Train Dreams holds an impressive 96% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, with Edgerton's performance as Robert garnering stellar reviews. The Netflix movie is shaping up to be a major Oscar contender, with a personal story about a man struggling with his place in the world, being away from his family for long periods, and his work, packing a powerful punch.
The movie is based on Denis Johnson's novella of the same name. Edgerton is joined by a cast that includes Felicity Jones as Robert's wife, Gladys Grainier, William H. Macy, Kerry Condon, and more. Train Dreams is the perfect portrait of what makes an ordinary life so extraordinary.
2 Wonka (2023)
After an emotional note to start the weekend on, the next best movie on Netflix to continue our session is Wonka. Last week, I talked about a major Hollywood star in the form of Dwayne Johnson in San Andreas. Similarly, this weekend on Netflix is perfect for another adventure with a star, this time Timothée Chalamet's Wonka.
Wonka has it all. Chalamet makes for an endearing version of the famous fictional chocolatier, with Willy Wonka's origin story being fun, tragic, vibrant, and full of twists and turns. The musical elements work wonders for this box office hit, which will have audiences repeating tunes throughout the weekend. Wonka leaves Netflix on December 1st, so better watch it while you can!
1 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
The final movie on our Netflix weekend binge list is another lighter entry that ends the descent from drama to comedy. Rian Johnson's Knives Out franchise injected new life into the whodunit genre, leading to a surge of comedic murder mysteries in the past few years. The next entry in the popular franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, releases on Netflix on December 12.
Before then, it will have a limited theatrical release that starts on November 26. As such, it is the perfect time to rewatch the franchise's latest film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, in preparation for Wake Up Dead Man. Glass Onion brings Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc to a billionaire's private island, making for the perfect Netflix movie to end the weekend on a high.
