Arden Cho & May Hong Dish On KPop Demon Hunters, "FREE" Cover, And Sequel Goals

Arden Cho and May Hong sit down with Liam Crowley for ScreenRant's Coffee Chats, Sharing behind-the-scenes stories from KPop Demon Hunters.

Coffee Chats Episode 8: Arden Cho & May Hong Dish On KPop Demon Hunters, "FREE" Cover, And Sequel Goals 4 By  Liam Crowley Published 18 minutes ago Liam is a reporter and host. He has been applying his broadcast skillset to the world of entertainment media for over five years, having led interview coverage for The Direct and ComicBook before taking his talents to ScreenRant. Liam's interviews have been spotlighted by THR, Variety, Deadline, and dozens of others. Prior to working in the industry, Liam was a proud fan of entertainment media itself throughout his childhood. He used to rush off the school bus in the 2010s to watch Collider Movie Talk and junket interviews from the likes of Chris Van Vliet, Kevin McCarthy, and Brandon Davis. That adolescent passion pushed Liam to pursue a degree in Broadcast & Digital Journalism, which he attained at Syracuse University, and the rest is history. Coffee Chats with two guests? This is what it sounds like. ScreenRant's signature interview series returns for its eighth episode with KPop Demon Hunters stars Arden Cho and May Hong! Cho and Hong share a caffeinated conversation with host Liam Crowley over an iced Americano and cappuccino, respectively, as the three recount their historic venture from the early recording booth days to KPop Demon Hunters shattering streaming records, all at Netflix HQ in New York City.

In this episode of Coffee Chats, Cho and Hong reveal when they first started to realize that KPop Demon Hunters was becoming a cultural phenomenon, how Cho's cover of "FREE" came together, and how Hong's experience working on the film made her reminisce about her family.

Cho & Hong are still processing KPop Demon Hunters' success

KPop Demon Hunters quietly arrived on Netflix this past June, as the streamer put a fairly tame marketing campaign behind it in the lead-up to its release, but that all changed drastically once audiences got their hands on it. Before long, you couldn't go five minutes in public without hearing "Golden" blasting from a grocery store or a car's stereo. Hong is still waiting for the film's tracklist to come across her ears naturally, but Cho can't escape it.

May Hong: There's something happening where I have not had a chance to hear it in public or in a grocery store or anywhere. Everyone tells me that they hear it everywhere, and I haven't!

Arden Cho: It's crazy. Every restaurant I go to, every cafe, they'll play it. It's really adorable. I was filming a movie in Seattle and more than half the places we would visit, they would start playing it, and then the staff would come in and say hello. And it's so sweet. One of the biggest things was right after the movie came out, I was actually in Korea and Malaysia and over in Asia, and it was just so cool to see the overwhelming amount of support and joy. This is really something so special. I feel like we can't even capture it in words what it feels like. This doesn't happen often in Hollywood.

Arden Cho Tells All About Her Fan-Favorite "FREE" Cover

"I was like, 'Oh my God, I would be honored...'"

KPop Demon Hunters spreads the wealth amongst the HUNTR/X members. While Cho, Hong, and Ji-young Yoo lend their voices for the speaking scenes, Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami provide the vocals for the songs. One month after the film hit Netflix, Cho, a singer herself, covered one of KPop Demon Hunters' most popular tracks alongside Korean actor and idol Cha Eun-woo. She shared her own excitement over the opportunity:

Arden Cho: I mean, Eun-woo is huge. I was like, 'Are you sure you want to do a cover with me? (laughs).' And I was a bit embarrassed, but I think it was really nice to feel the support and feel the love for it. And I am so thankful because he and his team just put it all together, and it was the last cover he did before going to the Army. I feel really thankful that he made time to do it. It was kind of the last little gift for the fans.

May Hong Reminisces About Her Family Through KPop Demon Hunters

"I think that would be really cool, if I could just have more time with them..."

Hong has Korean roots, as she was born in Seoul, but she had moved to America by the time she was six years old. When prompted by Crowley for her "Desert Island Drinks" (dream companion, dream location, dream beverage), Hong noted that KPop Demon Hunters has made her think of her family's origins and the questions she still has about her roots.

May Hong: I think the movie has really brought up a lot, because the movie starts out with all of this history. Granted, it doesn't really specifically go into being Korean, but, I mean, I lost both my grandmothers a couple of years ago. I had so many questions left, and I'm sad that I don't get to ask more of those questions. And so I think that would be really cool, if I could just have more time with them, and tea.

Coffee Chats operates as a mixture of personal discussion through the lens of coffee as well as a dive into the guest's latest project. Along the way, we'll hit a Cold Brew Open, give our First Sip Synopsis, discuss our personal Coffee Callbacks, share our dream Desert Island Drinks and more.

"I pride myself on being a conversationalist, and there's no better setting to chat it up with someone than a cafe," ScreenRant Reporter, Host Liam Crowley said. "Back when I attended Syracuse University, I used to make 'coffee review' videos with my friends on my social media. To essentially expand that 60-second concept into a full-blown production and be accompanied by some of the biggest names in Hollywood is a true 'pinch me' moment."

"From the moment I reached out to Liam about joining ScreenRant's New York team, we envisioned expanding our content offerings with engaging, in-depth interviews, including an original series," ScreenRant Editorial, Branding, and PR Director Rob Keyes said. "Liam already had an idea for this, and Coffee Chats perfectly embodies this vision, offering a unique format that connects audiences with leading industry talent while supporting local businesses. We are thrilled to launch this series and collaborate with local establishments on this exciting initiative.”

"Over the past 21 years, ScreenRant has interviewed every star in Hollywood several times," ScreenRant Content Director Alex Leadbeater said. "Across press junkets, red carpets, convention panels and beyond, we've been a constant presence in the entertainment industry. Coffee Chats builds upon this success to create a more intimate backdrop for a more personal, longer-form style of interview."

Coffee Chats is created by Crowley, Keyes, and Leadbeater and is produced by Tiffany Loving, Laura Watson, Jacques Reeder, John Aljets, Leah Nucum, Cesar Garcia, Kazden Risk, and Joe O'Shea.
