Warning: This article contains spoilers for 2025's Wicked: For Good, now in theaters.Wicked: For Good nods to another one of the biggest movies of director Jon M. Chu's career, the result of his tastes in crafting wedding scenes. While Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) is on the run as a vigilante activist in Wicked: For Good, Glinda (Ariana Grande) is working as a spokesperson for the regime and is preparing to marry Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey).

When images from the sequence started appearing in the marketing, it was quickly noted that Wicked's wedding bears a resemblance to Crazy Rich Asians' counterpart, with both ceremonies having a lot of forest décor and the bride walking down the aisle by herself. Now, Chu has acknowledged the similarity himself and delved further into the scene's design.

"I want a yellow brick road with yellow butterflies, and I want her to walk, and I want these butterflies to flutter up when she's walking," said Chu, via The Hollywood Reporter. "I think it could be the most beautiful thing. And, yes, it did evoke a little bit of that Crazy Rich Asians feel, but in real life, because in Oz, it's all possible."

The fantasy setting, allowing the production team to do almost anything, sparked some wild ideas for the wedding, including, at one point, an entire orchestra floating in the air. However, Chu was forced to scale back the wedding because of time and budget constraints, and what appears in the final film is actually one of the more minimal versions.

"I think I brought our wedding design team in like six times," says Chu, "killing each of their designs being like, 'This is Oz. Think crazier. Think weirder. Think bizarre. This is not a regular wedding,' and they did it every time. And I was never really satisfied. And in the end, I think we went back to one of the most simple versions."

However, the wedding also ties into darker themes, as it happens while Elphaba is discovering a room of imprisoned animals elsewhere in the palace (whom she releases, allowing them to stampede the ceremony). Additionally, in the Wicked movie universe, the yellow brick road is built with forced animal labor, altering the meaning of the pathway of yellow butterflies.

Costume designer Paul Tazewell, who designed Glinda's wedding dress to be "vulnerable" while incorporating many butterfly embellishments, says: "All of it is operating as someone like Glinda, her idea of a perfect wedding. It speaks of Madame Morrible and the Wizard and orchestrating this as an image of good." Glinda and Fiyero's image as the perfect couple is part of their propaganda.

Like much of the production and costume design in both Wicked movies, the wedding scene is gorgeous, but loaded with complex symbolism. However, fans may appreciate the connection between Wicked: For Good and Crazy Rich Asians being validated, both showcasing Chu's ability to handle such visually splendid movies.
