While the project clearly has a long way to go, there's already amazing news about a second season courtesy of HBO's chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys. The new series, like its predecessors, will be based on J.K. Rowling's acclaimed fantasy novels, and as HBO previously indicated, the plan is for each season to span one of the novels, which would mean seven seasons in total.
As revealed by Bloys less than 24 hours ago, the writers are currently in the process of crafting Season 2 of the Harry Potter series while Season 1 continues production. He stated during a press conference that the goal is not to have such a large gap between filming both seasons and their release schedules, even though it's a "big show."
“The plan is to still try and get it — I don’t know if it’s going to be like stop shooting Season 1 on Friday and start Season 2 on Monday. There’ll be a break in there, but we’re going to do whatever we can to not have a huge gap. For the kids, obviously, but also for viewers. You know, trying to not have massive gaps. It is a big show, lots of special effects, obviously, massive operation, but we’re going to do what we can.”
HBO's 'Harry Potter' Makes Progress with Production
Production on HBO's Harry Potter adaptation has been underway for months, with principal photography beginning on 14 July 2025. Even Rowling made her first visit to the UK set this week to inspect the project's progress, which has been filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and on location. The fantasy series sees Dominic McLaughlin star as the titular Hogwarts wizard with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, completing the famous heroic trio. Other announced stars include Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod write and direct, respectively.
HBO's Harry Potter series debuts sometime in 2027 on HBO. Stick with Collider for future updates.
