Matthew Modine Compares Monsterverse And Stranger Things Experiences

Exclusive: Matthew Modine reveals how the Monsterverse reminds him of the best parts of Stranger Things with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

How The Monsterverse’s Next Movie Borrows The Best Lesson From Stranger Things Explained By Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Star Kong looking in pain with his fist frozen in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Kong looking in pain with his fist frozen in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 4 By  Grant Hermanns Published 29 minutes ago Grant Hermanns is a TV News Editor, Interview Host and Reviewer for ScreenRant, having joined the team in early 2021. Matthew Modine is making the leap from the world of Stranger Things to that of the Monsterverse in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, though he feels it isn't too much of a change for a good reason. Modine has been part of the Netflix sci-fi horror series as Dr. Martin Brenner, the intense and brutal head scientist of Hawkins National Laboratory who is behind El's powers and, inadvertently, the connecting of the Indiana town with the Upside Down.

Modine was announced to be joining the Godzilla x Kong: Supernova cast in Spring 2025, with production kicking off a month later and having taken place everywhere from Queensland to Utah, Mexico, Mumbai and England, among others. While story details are still under wraps, the movie is expected to follow in The New Empire's footsteps as the titular Titans fight a new world-threatening foe. Much like its story, Modine's character details are being kept a secret for the time being, with the only information pointing to him playing a military general.

Now, during an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for the Stranger Things: Catalyst VR Experience, Modine opened up about joining the Monsterverse with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. When asked about the difference in experiences between that of the Legendary franchise, which he describes as being "so cool," and that of Netflix's series, Modine felt that the two ultimately share a connective thread in their goal of entertaining audiences:

Making movies is making movies. Doesn’t matter the budget or scale of the show. It’s about storytelling. Creating an adventure for the audience. Taking them to magical places. Solving problems. Defeating monsters. Finding love. Strengthening friendships. Those experiences in storytelling have the ability to help us all be more positive and allow us to see the other in ourselves. To understand our shared values and humanity. What a great job to have!

Since its launch with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla in 2014, the Monsterverse has certainly strived to be more than an atypical monster action franchise across its decade-plus tenure by often offering a bigger focus on its human characters. Unfortunately, this has not always been met with the best reception from critics or audiences, with the action and visual effects always garnering consistent praise, but sometimes not being enough to overcome said criticisms.

However, the past few releases have seen the Monsterverse gradually overcome its human character critiques, particularly that of Apple TV's Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, whose near-exclusive human focus necessitated an improvement on this front. While the past two Godzilla and Kong crossovers have still left some mixed on this element, reception has gradually improved in their balance of kaiju action with human storytelling.

As such, Modine's comments are sure to come as an encouraging sign for those keen to see how Godzilla x Kong: Supernova expands the Monsterverse. The mainline Stranger Things series is inarguably best known for its mix of genre storytelling with moving character work, and if the Golden Globe nominee feels that the 2027 film captures that same level of magic, it could become an even bigger hit than the record-setting The New Empire.
