Stranger Things Season 5 is beginning later this month with the release of Volume 1, and creators The Duffer Brothers are preparing fans for what’s in store, including their "most violent death yet."
In an interview with The Times, The Duffer Brothers – Ross and Matt – spoke about their past seasons of Netflix’s sci-fi series, including their final season and what people can expect from their beloved characters. Matt and Ross spoke of scenes they had to cut for being too violent, but there is one death in season 5 where people should be worried:
"I would say season five is not as violent as season four, but it has the most violent death of any season."
Ross states that the creators "try to restrain" themselves from doing anything too violent, but there was "one shot in season three" that they cut, which Matt still isn’t too happy about, as it cost "$40,000" to create. Another shot Netflix deemed too much was in season 1, when you see a bullet go through the head of diner owner Benny Hammond.
The Duffer Brothers have been enticed away from Netflix to a new four-year deal with Paramount, which will allow the pair to create film, television, and streaming projects for the studio, beginning in April 2026. The deal also includes their desire to create large-scale theatrical films through their company, Upside Down Pictures.
Stranger Things creators spoke about the deal, as they’re still currently working with Netflix, and made it clear they aren’t "unhappy" with Netflix, but rather "love" the streaming service. "It was the fact that Ross and I grew up watching movies in the theater and wanting to make a movie for the theater, which is something that Netflix doesn’t really do," stated Matt.

Matt and Ross spoke about the pressure when creating the final season and not wanting to fall into the hall of fame for the worst TV finales, including Game of Thrones, which is considered one of the worst. Matt stated, "Every character’s ending needed to feel right. That was more important than providing the fans with the ending they’re hoping for."
Stranger Things has become a global phenomenon, reportedly earning Netflix over $1 billion in revenue. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the group is left reeling after the tragic events of season 4 and must work together to take down Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) once and for all.
Stranger Things Season 5 will begin on November 26 with Volume 1, followed by Volume 2 on December 25, and the final episode will be released on December 31.
