Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was ruled out of being able to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Week 12 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams with an injury to his left shoulder. Mayfield appeared to hurt his non-throwing shoulder in the second quarter and aggravated it on a hail mary pass to close the first half. Backup QB Teddy Bridgewater will replace him.
Mayfield was not particularly effective against the Rams in the first half, completing just nine of 19 pass attempts for 41 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. The first interception came on a bobbled reception by Cade Otton and was returned for a touchdown by Rams cornerback Cobie Durant. The second came on the Mayfield's hail mary attempt when he was injured.
The Bucs lost a one-sided game to the Los Angeles Rams, but they didn't risk losing Mayfield for a long period of time. With the game all but out of hand, playing Bridgewater was really the only option the Bucs have, even if Mayfield were remotely capable of playing, which he has done amid injury in the past.
