Nov. 20—BISMARCK — For the second-straight year, the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan volleyball team will be playing in the NDHSAA Class B State Tournament semifinals.
"I am so proud of my girls for battling and getting the win against a very good team," M/P-B head coach Jacie Connell said after the Thunder's win against Surrey in the opening round of the tournament. "We stayed confident and calm when things weren't going our way and stepped up in the last three sets."
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSurrey defeated M/P-B 25-22 in the opening set but the Thunder came back to defeat the Mustangs 25-22, 26-24, 25-22 to win the match.
Junior Destiny Opp hounded Surrey's defense with a match-high 22 kills. When Opp wasn't hitting, the Mustangs had to watch out for Brynn Sorenson. The senior posted 19 kills and a match-high of 28 digs. Violet Bohl recorded a double-double with 48 assists and 22 digs. The junior setter also recorded two aces.
M/P-B will play in semifinal No. 1 on Friday at 9 a.m. against Our Redeemer's. The Knights topped Linton/HMB 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
"I'm so thrilled to be in the top-four and to have a shot at a state championship game," Connell said. "We need to play consistent volleyball tomorrow and keep our energy up. I am so excited for my team. They have worked so hard to get here and I'm looking forward to another day at the State B."

E/K-M defeated the fifth-seeded Bulldogs 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 in the opening round of the NDHSAA Class B State Volleyball Tournament. The win pushes the Rebels through to the semifinal round where they will face Langdon Area/ Edmore-Munich. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday at the Bismarck Events Center.
E/K-M's first appearance at State in 19 years was paced by Kalyn Klusmann with nine kills against the Bulldogs. Jazmyn Zaun, Elli Lloyd and Betsy Huber all put six kills on the books.
Huber, Lloyd, Zaun and Klusmann all tallied an ace.
