If you needed proof that The Princess Bride is eternal, here it is: Nearly four decades after its 1987 debut, the Rob Reiner–directed fantasy classic is back in Hulu’s Top 10 and charming a whole new generation of viewers. You know it's a good one when it keeps reappearing; it's one of those rare films that seems to get better with time. Oh, and it's still considered by many to be the greatest fantasy movie ever made.
Adapted from William Goldman’s 1973 novel, The Princess Bride tells the story of Westley (Cary Elwes), a humble farm boy who sets off on a quest to rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright), from the clutches of the delightfully detestable Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). Along the way, Westley encounters a series of now-iconic characters: the vengeance-driven Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), criminal mastermind Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), and the gentle giant Fezzik (André the Giant).
Its original box office run brought in a modest $30.9 million on a $16 million budget, but its second life was massive. VHS rentals, cable reruns, and decades of quoting “As you wish” turned it into a bona fide cult classic. Today, the movie sits at an impressive 96% critics' score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Will We Get a 'Princess Bride' Sequel?
Looks like it's off the table for the moment, and Wright's recent comments have confirmed it, revealing that the cast had a lighthearted Zoom call where the idea came up — but nothing serious is in development, as her comments about the cast's age suggested: “A lot of us are going to be in a wheelchair."
The stage musical of the film, however, is very real and finally gaining traction after years of delays. Originally announced back in 2006, the musical has been inching forward ever since, and now it’s officially entered the active development phase. A major workshop is reportedly scheduled for later this year. Even better, Disney’s Frozen duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are handling the original score. The book is being written by Bob Martin and Rick Elice, known for Jersey Boys, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Smash. It’s not a movie sequel, but it’s the closest fans have come to getting new Princess Bride storytelling in nearly 40 years — and for many, that’s reason enough to celebrate.
