Give me a lighthearted recap
All good things must come to an end. It’s been five years since we last tuned into The CW’s hit series Supernatural and bid adieu to demon-hunting brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), as well as a slew of other unforgettable characters, and we’re still in recovery. The last few years have brought us plenty of productions with the on-screen brothers in starring roles, with Padalecki taking on the titular part in the Walker reboot and Ackles bopping around to numerous new projects like Big Sky, Tracker, and The Boys. But now, we’ve got to say farewell to Supernatural all over again thanks to the harsh reality that the series will officially be leaving its streaming home of Netflix after a solid and lengthy run.
For a long time, suggesting the beloved series to a friend was as easy as saying “It’s streaming on Netflix,” but now it’s unclear how we’ll turn folks onto the healing powers of Supernatural. With 15 seasons in all, it will be nearly impossible (although it technically could be done) for someone to start at the beginning and make it through before the title takes its Netflix leave on December 18. Even worse, there’s not been an announcement surrounding where we can expect the show to resurface with its lengthy and expansive catalog, meaning that — at least for now — Supernatural is truly going dark.
For fans of Ackles, the news will come as the one-two punch they simply didn't need, as his latest series, Countdown, was recently given the axe by Prime Video. After just one season of high-octane action, Ackles and the rest of the cast of the Derek Haas-created series were given the bad news back in October, just over one month since the Season 1 finale aired. Things are looking better for Padalecki followers, with the actor landing not just one new project but two. He will star in both an untitled Christmas movie for Netflix alongside Leighton Meester, and he also has a medical procedural on the way from the brains behind Walker.
Will There Ever Be More ‘Supernatural’?
Apart from their reunion in The Boys alongside fellow Supernatural alum, Misha Collins, it doesn’t look likely for a spin-off series to rise from the ashes anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean that the three leading men haven’t thought about it. Over the summer, in celebration of the show’s 20-year anniversary, they weighed in on what a Supernatural reunion might look like to them, with Padalecki revealing,
“We’re all a lot older than we were 20 years ago. I don’t know if I have 22 episodes of Supernatural in me. I think a limited series would be great.”
For now, head over to Netflix to binge as much Supernatural as you can before the streamer drops the series on December 18.
