Liverpool have seemingly taken to heart the One Club ethos as not only have the men’s team struggled in league play, but the women’s team as well. Gareth Taylor’s side is bottom of the Women’s Super League table and have yet to notch a win in the current league campaign.
However, the women did manage to take a big step towards getting something out of this season as they beat Sheffield United 4-1 on Saturday in the League Cup. This win helps to bring the Reds into the Quarter-Finals, one step closer to getting a chance to fight for something.

In fact, on the strength of a Beata Olsson hat-trick and a goal from Mia Enderby, Liverpool notched a 4-1 victory. Which is notable because they’ve only managed to score 5 goals across all of their Women’s Super League matches.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Olsson was gracious in noting the service she received all match from her teammates.
“I think I’m in a good flow right now and the team helps a lot. There’s a lot of good service, like Ceri [Holland] had two great balls today and [Cornelia] Kapocs was incredible as well. I just figured out where to be in the box and that helps me a lot.”
Liverpool will hope that this might be a springboard to better form and results in the league. At the very least, it will be good to get out of the final spot of the table in order to avoid a playoff to remain in the top-flight – a wrinkle added to this season in preparation of the league’s expansion to 14 teams next season.
Perhaps Olsson rounding in to form could be the catalyst for a turnaround in Liverpool’s season. We’ll have to wait to find out until the team face Arsenal after the international break.
