The Golden State Warriors lost their ninth game of the season on Friday, Nov. 21, falling to the Portland Trail Blazers 127-123. Steve Kerr's team struggled to get stops throughout the game, with multiple missed rotations and weak denials on drives.
When speaking to the media after the game, Stephen Curry detailed what the Warriors must do to improve their defensive production and how it's on the entire rotation to work in tandem.
"We've had some bright spots," Curry said. "Some games where we've shown that we can do it for 48 minutes. And we've had some duds. Even tonight, we had ebbs and flows. Whatever the answer is, it's a reminder that you have to fly around and be on a string. Not have mental errors where you're letting guys get to their strong hands. Game plan, discipline, type stuff. We've struggled with that part [this season] — especially tonight, letting guys just drive right out of the paint...Stuff like that over the course of the game, you start chasing a little bit."
Despite the Warriors' inconsistencies on the defensive end, they're still a top-10 defensive team in the NBA. We're also only a month into the new season, so there is more than enough time for Golden State to iron out some of its current issues. Nevertheless, the veteran core is clearly holding each other to a high standard, as Jimmy Butler also called out the team's defensive lapses in his postgame news conference.
“We’re just not guarding anybody,” Butler said. “From what I can tell, I haven’t been here long, but that’s never been the formula here. Not to win a championship. You’ve got to take each and every matchup personally… we’ve got to do way better guarding on that side of the ball...You’re not taking anything away. You’re not taking the paint away. You’re not taking away layups, free throws, lobs, threes… tonight they were getting whatever shot they wanted.”
The Warriors will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 23, when they face the Utah Jazz, as they look to try and start stacking some wins and building some momentum after navigating a gruelling schedule to begin the season.
