Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) may have quietly broken Captain Benjamin Sisko's (Avery Brooks) record on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. As Major Kira, Nerys was Sisko's First Officer and Bajoran liaison for all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, receiving a promotion to Colonel towards the end of the series.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended with the United Federation of Planets and their allies winning the Dominion War. Captain Sisko and Colonel Kira were instrumental in Cardassia turning on their Dominion allies and forcing the Changelings to surrender. After Sisko saved Bajor from Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo) and the Pah-Wraiths, he fulfilled his destiny as Emissary of the Prophets and joined Bajor's gods.
Captain Sisko becoming one with the Prophets was the end of his mortal life as a Starfleet Officer. When Sisko joined Bajor's Celestial Temple, Colonel Kira took over as the station commander of Deep Space Nine. Kira still ran the station when the USS Cerritos visited in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, which hinted that Nerys was on her way to eclipsing Captain Sisko.
Colonel Kira Has Likely Commanded Deep Space Nine Longer Than Captain Sisko
It's very possible that Colonel Kira Nerys commands Deep Space Nine longer than Captain Sisko's seven years. In Star Trek's Prime Timeline, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ended in 2375 with the end of the Dominion War. Star Trek: Lower Decks begins in 2380, and the USS Cerritos visits Colonel Kira and DS9 in 2381 – 6 years after Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's finale.
After five seasons, Star Trek: Lower Decks ended in 2383, and it's safe to assume that Colonel Kira is still running Deep Space Nine. There has been no indication from Star Trek that this is no longer the case. This means that by the time Captain Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) takes command of the USS Cerritos and Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) runs Starbase 80, Colonel Kira is in her 8th year as DS9's station commander.
It's fitting that Colonel Kira is likely still running Deep Space Nine in the 2380s. Nerys has credibility with Starfleet as a war hero and one of the leaders of Bajor. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's 2019 documentary, What We Left Behind, postulated what could have been Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 8, and Kira was still running the station 20 years later.
Everything DS9 Update From Star Trek: Lower Decks & Picard
Besides Colonel Kira still in command of Deep Space Nine, Star Trek on Paramount+'s shows have sporadically provided updates on what happened to the space station and some of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's eclectic cast of characters after the series ended, although post-DS9 appearances have been limited to animation in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
After Colonel Kira and Quark (Armin Shimerman) appeared in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3, Grand Nagus Rom (Max Grodenchik) and his wife, First Clerk Leeta (Chase Masterson), laid the groundwork for Ferenginar joining the Federation in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 6, "Parth Ferengi's Heart Place."
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9, "Fissure Quest," also introduced alternate reality versions of Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and his husband, Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson), as well as Curzon Dax (Fred Tatasciore).
Star Trek: Picard season 1 revealed that Quark successfully franchised his bar across several worlds, including Freecloud, in 2399. Star Trek: Picard season 3 then introduced Vadic (Amanda Plummer), the leader of a group of rogue Changelings seeking revenge for Section 31 torturing them during the Dominion War. Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) was informed of Vadic by Odo (Rene Auberjonois), who remained in the Great Link.
Until Star Trek says otherwise, Colonel Kira remains in command of Deep Space Nine, and has likely run the station longer than Captain Sisko did in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. However, Bajor didn't join the Federation during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and there is no indication that Kira's homeworld ever did become a Federation member.
