Doctor Doom's Death Promises A Catastrophic War

Doctor Doom's final wish sets up a devastating war over his power and kingdom, which could be at the center of Marvel's next big event.

Marvel's Doctor Doom has officially been defeated, and that may be terrible news for the whole universe. After stealing the Sorcerer Supreme mantle from Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom became virtually unstoppable. No coalition of heroes or governments was able to make a dent in his tyrannical reign, until Doom's own hubris got the best of him.

In One World Under Doom #9, Doctor Doom trades his life to the Living Tribunal in exchange for Valeria Richards' resurrection. Doom's race to beg the Living Tribunal to undo a tragedy he himself caused perfectly encapsulates Doom's excessive ego. It also presents a more dramatic take on Gorr's story from the MCU's Thor: Love and Thunder, where Christian Bale's Gorr gives up his life to Eternity in exchange for his daughter Love.

Beyond his personal arc, Doctor Doom's final wish before dying sets up what could easily become Marvel's next big threat.

Right before disintegrating, Doctor Doom uses his last breaths to visit Reed Richards and ask him to "take care of [his] world." Doom leaves behind his mask, which contains his final will and testament. The message declares, "all that I possess, own or rule, including my nation of Latveria, shall be bequeathed to whosoever manages to..." One World Under Doom #9 doesn't reveal the villain's full testament, but it strongly suggests that Doom is instigating a war over his legacy.

The biggest question about the end of Doom's reign has already been answered. Wanda Maximoff has officially become Marvel's new Sorcerer Supreme, and she will be in charge of protecting the world from mystical threats in her own comic, Sorcerer Supreme. However, how the world will change once Doom's fist isn't gripping it continues to be a mystery.

In true Doctor Doom fashion, the tyrant makes a final effort to hurt as many people as possible out of sheer spite. Since he can't hold on to power, Doom has seemingly decided to motivate all kinds of power-hungry individuals to possibly fight to the death over his inheritance. Whether that looks like a Contest of Champions-like tournament or a dirty, free-for-all war is yet to be seen.

Doctor Doom’s final wish to leave his inheritance up for grabs could easily ignite a worldwide conflict. Doom possesses technology, magical artifacts, hidden weapons, and knowledge that surpasses even the most advanced governments. Doom basically guarantees that the most ruthless and immoral individuals will stop at nothing to seize his legacy. His death could become the spark that pushes Earth’s political and criminal forces to all-out war.

Supervillains might suddenly gain access to world-ending technology, and ancient secrets Doom guarded for decades could fall into the worst possible hands. In fact, Red Hulk has already planted a US flag on Latverian soil, practically declaring war over Doom's land. In one final act of twisted genius, Doom might be destabilizing the Earth more in death than he ever did in life.
