3 Disney Animated TV Shows That Deserve Live-Action Remakes

Disney loves to remake its classic movies in live-action, but it's their animated TV shows that should be getting the remake treatment.

Disney loves to reimagine their classic animated films into live-action, but it should consider doing the same for their television shows and breathe new life into these forgotten series. Every time Disney announces it will be revisiting a classic animation in live-action, the internet gets lit on fire.

Half of the people are delighted by the chance to see their favorite films in a blockbuster format and maybe share something from their childhoods with a younger generation, and half the people bemoan the lack of creativity in Hollywood, decrying these films as cynical cash grabs. Both sides make good points.

Disney has been doing live-action remakes for a much longer time than you might have guessed. In 1996, the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Glen Close premiered, and it's been non-stop ever since. What Disney has never done is reimagine one of its many animated TV shows into a live-action series, but it absolutely should.

Dave The Barbarian (2004-2005)

"Ba Barbarian. Ba-ba Barbarian". Even if you don't quite remember Dave the Barbarian, chances are you remember its catchy intro song. The surreal comedy series is set in a fictional magical kingdom during the Middle Ages, where there are dragons, princesses, and Dave the Barbarian, a hulking warrior afraid of his own shadow.

The series stands out from almost every other Disney animated TV show for both its exaggerated animation style and self-referential, surreal comedy that has helped craft it into a cult classic. Dave the Barbarian is more Animaniancs than it is Phineas and Ferb, and it has held up better than most series.

It's a series that could be perfect for a live-action reimagining. Fantasy television is always popular, and, beyond the costumes and a few creatures, the series would not have to be some epic affair. Dave the Barbarian was a bit of a satire of the genre in 2005, and we could use another satire in such a saturated fantasy market.

Kim Possible (2002-2007)

There are plenty of young-adult-focused fantasy TV shows, but there aren't nearly enough spy thrillers aimed at younger viewers. A live-action version of Kim Possible could be just the thing to fill that gap. While there was a live-action movie in 2019 followed by a miniseries, something in a longer format would be best.

The 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie premiered on Disney Channel as a Disney Channel Original Movie.

The animated action TV show follows Kim Possible, an accomplished high school student who moonlights as a secret agent, working alongside her best friend Ron and his naked mole rat, Rufus. Unlike most "double-life" shows, Kim's family is well aware of her crimefighting job and is in full support of it.

Kim Possible is extremely clever and creative with the missions it sends Kim on, which often take place all over the world. A live-action series could retain this globetrotting sensibility, making for an exciting and dynamic spy show that would primarily be aimed at kids. It's James Bond for Gen Alpha.

It's actually very surprising that there has never been a major live-action Tarzan TV show. It's a very popular story, and one that movie studios are happy to keep dipping into, so why don't TV networks like Disney do the same? Disney is in a great position to do so as well, thanks to The Legend of Tarzan.

This two-season animated series is a sequel to 1999's Tarzan, picking up where the film left off, with Tarzan, Jane, and Dr. Porter deciding to live in the jungle together. Jane and Tarzan are now married, and while Tarzan shows Jane how to live in the wild, Jane explains the finer points of being a human to Tarzan.

The Legend of Tarzan is loads of fun, introducing quirky and fun animal characters in all the bright colors and beautiful animation of the movie. It could be an incredible live-action TV show. Disney has shown time and time again that it can generate realistic animals, and The Legend of Tarzan would be a great use of the technology.
