The Detroit Red Wings rallied from two goals down in the third period to give fans at their matinee something to cheer.
The Columbus Blue Jackets played with the lead for much of the outing at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, Nov. 22, but the Wings showed mettle and scored twice in three minutes to force the game past regulation. Alex DeBrincat scored in overtime to complete the comeback at 4-3.

Defensemen get it going
Trailing by a goal going into the third period, the Wings made a push to get around Jet Greaves' crease, but their job got harder when Zach Werenski redirected a bouncing puck into Detroit's net midway through the period during four-on-four play.
Ben Chiarot got it back to one goal when he slid into the low slot and fired the puck through traffic at 10:23, and Albert Johansson drew a penalty to put the Wings on a power play soon after. Axel Sandin-Pellikka lost the puck and Sean Monahan turned that into a breakaway that Cam Talbot denied.

Inconsistent first period
The Wings, coming off an embarrassing 5-0 loss at home to the New York Islanders, came out with pace Saturday, but had trouble sustaining it.
When the Wings went on a penalty kill at 12:13 of the first period, shots favored them 10-3. When Chiarot joined Travis Hamonic in the penalty box at 12:35, it left the Wings short two skaters for 1:39. Michigan alumnus and former Hobey Baker Award winner Adam Fantilli converted during five-on-three play when he turned a pass from Werenski, a fellow former Wolverine, into a goal at 13:18. The Wings came out of the stretch down a goal and down some momentum, and weren't able to regain momentum even when they got a power play of their own at 14:35. The teams played four-on-four when Damon Severson's interference penalty was offset by an embellishment call on Patrick Kane at 18:15.

Cool hand, Lucas Raymond
Raymond made scoring look easy less than a minute into the first period when he maneuvered the puck around Werenski and flipped the puck behind Greaves, but the lift was short-lived as the Blue Jackets replied on the next shift when Denton Mateychuk fired a shot that deflected in off teammate Miles Wood. The Wings challenged Wood interfered with Talbot but officials ruled Wood was outside of the crease when he made incidental contact with Talbot and therefore it did not constitute interference, leaving the Wings to kill a penalty for delay of game.

The Blue Jackets had the better second period, generating chances in the offensive zone and keeping the Wings from getting much on Greaves. One of Detroit's better opportunities came with around five minutes to go, when Patrick Kane found DeBrincat breaking towards Columbus' net, but Greaves turned away the puck. The Wings were outshot, 11-9, in the second period.
