Despite teasing and setting up John Diggle's massive Arrowverse storyline, the Green Lantern endgame never came to fruition in The CW's DC TV shows. The Arrowverse franchise brought several iconic heroes to life from the pages of DC Comics to the world created on The CW, but one that had to get scrapped at the last minute was the long-awaited fruition of Diggle becoming a Green Lantern.
During ScreenRant's Arrowverse Heroes panel, moderated by Joe Deckelmeier, David Ramsey looked back at Diggle's major story arc that the franchise had spent several years building towards his character becoming an Emerald Knight. Ramsey, who starred in every season of Arrow, stated, "Yeah, it was, right Marc [Guggenheim]? Marc and I tried for six seasons. Obviously, there is a lot of politics around property as big as Lantern."
He admitted that, "Of course, it would have been great," Ramsey elaborated on how John Wesley Shipp's Flash from Earth-90 during the Elseworlds crossover "came from another universe to say, "John, where's your ring?" Obviously, we had Colonel Stewart playing my father in Ernie Hudson." In the end, "it wasn't for a lack of trying," he said before adding, "but the right decision was made."
The Arrowverse veteran admitted that "I think, honestly, personally, there was so much going on at the time that it's in the hands it should be in now," most likely referring to James Gunn's DC Universe, which has a live-action Green Lantern TV show coming up on HBO. Ramsey continued, "Because I'm not quite sure what would have happened with as much as was going on politically, with the property."
By the time they reached The Flash season 8, which is where Diggle decided to turn down the ring's offer, Ramsey concluded by saying, "I think the reason why Diggle didn't become the Lantern was on point for his character."

During the Arrowverse's final years, Berlanti was actually developing Green Lanterns for HBO Max, which initially was going to focus on multiple heroes, such as Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. However, the series was retooled into a John Stewart-focused project, right before DC Studios was launched, which led to that project getting scrapped, as Gunn's franchise began to develop the DCU's Lanterns for HBO.
The Arrowverse had, in general, a lot of restrictions from Warner Bros.'s film division, as there were numerous characters they were never allowed to use. Major players like Wonder Woman, Batman, and other Justice League characters were forbidden from having regular roles in the franchise, due to them being prioritized for the big screen.
The closest the Arrowverse got to the Green Lantern mythology was actually through Stargirl, set on the newly-formed Earth-2 after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Stargirl season 2 introduced Alan Scott's daughter, Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, a.k.a. DC's Jade, as she wields her father's ring.
All the Arrowverse shows are available through streaming and home media release.
