Landman season 2 has premiered, and while star Paulina Chavez is staying mum about spoilers, she did reflect on Ariana's character growth thus far in the latest episode of ScreenRant's Debunking AI. Season 1 saw the young widow mourn her husband, who died in an oil field accident, before moving forward in a new romantic relationship with Cooper (Jacob Lofland). Whether that new love will stand the test of time, however, has yet to be seen.
Landman season 2 begins on a high note, with things looking up for Cooper and his father Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) alike. While the latter has reached a new echelon of luxury as M-Tex's new president, the former's well has begun producing high quantities of oil — a fact that's surely set to change his and Ariana's lives. But Ariana herself doesn't seem too thrilled by the news, leaving viewers to wonder whether gray skies are on the horizon for the lovebirds.
Chavez would not answer that question directly during Debunking AI, but she did drop a few hints about the journey Ariana would take in Landman season 2. The actor also reflected on her favorite scene from season 1, her go-to music playlist to get into character, and plenty more. Watch the full video here and read on to learn about some highlights from the episode.
Yelling At Billy Bob Thornton Was One Of Her Most Terrifying (And Rewarding) Landman Moments
Chavez shared how proud she was of the lightheartedness on the set of Landman, despite the gritty and emotional scenes they often acted out. One moment that stood out to her above all others, though, was the dinner scene with Thornton's Tommy. Having to essentially kick him out of the house as Ariana "was so intimidating for me," she recalled. "I love everything that my character stands for and how she's really just thinking out loud in that scene," but the idea of yelling at a screen legend wasn't easy.
Thankfully, "Billy made it so easy to just work with him," Chavez gushed. "He's such a humble person and just so fun to work off of." One hilarious detail she revealed was that "the stew was actually really spicy" at Thornton's own request. "I definitely didn't choke the first little try that I had on the soup! I totally did. All of us did." The actor recounting the scene (and her costar's offscreen reaction to it) with touching accuracy:
Reading that scene, I was just rooting for Ariana, and I was cheering her on. And then I realized, "Oh, my God, I actually have to do this and yell at Billy Bob." But the biggest compliment was towards the end of the scene. I am literally holding the door open, and I'm like, "Get out of here"... But he told me after one of the takes, "Your reactions are just so beautiful." And that was just such a compliment from Billy Bob Thornton.
Landman Season 2 Lets Ariana Be A “Badass”

AI summarized Ariana's personality as composed of quiet strength, determination, and the ability to keep pushing forward no matter what life throws at her — all of which Chavez felt was an accurate reflection. "She is resilient, strong, and bold," the star added, before teasing, "This next season, you get to really see that side of her."
Aside from being in a relationship, what does she want? How is she going to fulfill herself?
"In the first season, she was not even touching the tip of the iceberg of her grief," Chavez reflected, remembering how "Cooper kind of allows her to grieve and walk through every moment with the memory of her husband who passed away," in the Landman season 1 finale. "That was so beautiful." Now that the mourning period is more or less over, "She is just such a badass this next season, and I can't wait for y'all to see it."
Whether her badassery will flourish alongside Cooper is another question entirely, and Chavez was reticent to spoil too much. "You guys are just going to have to wait and watch season 2 and see if they make it or not!" She did admit, however, that Ariana's self-reflection would affect her romantic relationship one way or another. "Her journey of resilience and self-discovery just continues to grow, and she's really figuring out her wants and her needs this season. Aside from being in a relationship, what does she want? How is she going to fulfill herself?"
Paulina Chavez Reveals Her Landman Playlist
While hardcore fans may already be aware, some casual viewers might be surprised to learn the influence that Tex-Mex singer Selena has on Chavez's portrayal of Ariana. "What I had in my first season playlist was 'My Heart Will Go On' [by Celine Dion] and Selena Quintanilla's 'Dreaming of You,'" the actor admitted. She explained that "Dreaming of You" was "one of the ending songs of the [Selena] movie, so as a kid, I always connected it to her death. That always got me very emotional with all the emotional things and crying that I had to do on set."
Another album by a newer artist helped her through tough set moments as well. "My 21st Century Blues by Raye, top to bottom. I love that album so much. To this day, I will listen to it." As for what's spinning on her Ariana playlist for season 2? "My album of choice was Bad Bunny's newest album, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, and that one got me through everything every day on set. I was turning it up full blast while showing up to set."
As for AI's performance, while it hallucinated an education in STEM for her and wrote a fanfic about Ariana's letters to her dead husband, Chavez concluded that it did pretty well for itself. "I'm kind of surprised by some of the things that I came up with because it's things that I've definitely thought and said behind closed doors, so that's a little terrifying, but I love it. I think it's great. Good job, AI."
