The movie has struggled to break out at the box office, although it registered a rather solid second-weekend hold. It remains to be seen if the target audience for Nuremberg, presumably older folks, will come out to watch it as the awards season heats up. Nuremberg has earned mixed reviews, which doesn't really bode well for its chances in the next few weeks, but star Russell Crowe has been praised for his performance as the Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. Still, Nuremberg has an uphill climb ahead of it, considering that even a documentary movie made twice as much at the box office as it has so far.
Most filmmakers, after tasting critical and commercial success of the highest order, would tend to challenge themselves with a smaller-scale project. But Peter Jackson followed his three Hobbit movies not with an intimate drama, but with a documentary. Released in 2018, They Shall Not Grow Old was assembled from 100-year-old footage of the First World War, which Jackson and his team painstakingly colorized and cleaned up. The footage was overlaid with dubbed audio and sound effects that provided a more immersive look at WWI than had ever been put on screen. There's a sense that a lazier filmmaker would've simply waited for technology — read, artificial intelligence — to advance to a degree where old footage could be modernized without as much effort, but Jackson's approach is a great example of how important the human touch remains.
'Nuremberg' Has Been Embraced by Audiences
Not only was They Shall Not Grow Old acclaimed by critics — it holds a near-perfect 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes — it was also a surprising success at the box office, grossing more than $20 million worldwide. Nuremberg, on the other hand, is sitting at around $9 million so far. Directed by James Vanderbilt and also featuring Rami Malek, Nuremberg holds a 70% score on RT, but those who've seen it have been unanimous in their praise. The movie is sitting at a "verified hot" 96% audience score on the aggregator website.
You can watch Nuremberg in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
