Del Toro broke out globally nearly two decades ago with Pan's Labyrinth, which is still widely considered to be his best work. The Spanish-language film was heavily inspired by the classic Spirit of the Beehive's political commentary, and further fleshed out the filmmaker's fascination for the fantastical following The Devil's Backbone, which was released five years prior. It also provided the first real signs of a visual style that would become del Toro's signature in future fantasy films.
According to FlixPatrol, Pan's Labyrinth broke into the domestic iTunes charts on November 17, while Frankenstein remained the number one movie on Netflix worldwide. Pan's Labyrinth jumped by five spots on November 18, overtaking Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, the first Now You See Me, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The leader board was topped, for the second day in a row, by Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, which recently hit the $200 million mark at the global box office on the eve of its PVOD debut.
The streaming success of Pan's Labyrinth comes not only in the wake of Frankenstein's release, but also immediately after it was announced that the movie would be given a special 20th anniversary theatrical re-release next year. Widely regarded as one of the best fantasy movies of all time, Pan's Labyrinth was released in the immediate aftermath of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, which moved mountains to earn mainstream legitimacy for the genre. The movie made around $90 million worldwide, and remains one of the highest-grossing foreign-language hits at the domestic box office.
'Frankenstein' Also Opened to Excellent Reviews
Pan's Labyrinth holds a "certified fresh" 95% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Pan's Labyrinth is Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups, with the horrors of both reality and fantasy blended together into an extraordinary, spellbinding fable." Del Toro went on to win a Best Picture and Best Director Oscar for The Shape of Water, which further exemplified his love for the fantasy genre. Frankenstein is one of his most expensive movies, with a reported price tag of $120 million. Odds are that it does very well in the technical categories at the upcoming Oscars.
You can check it out at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
