The LSU Tigers plan to officially issue a termination notice to head coach Brian Kelly after its Board of Supervisors voted in executive session to empower President Wade Rousse to proceed, according to reports.

The move comes after Kelly filed a lawsuit Nov. 10 claiming he was wrongfully terminated “for cause” and denying him the right to a roughly $54 million buyout.

Kelly contends he had not been legally dismissed when announced on Oct. 26, and that then-athletic director Scott Woodward lacked authority to fire him.

LSU went 5-3 at the time of the departure, including a 49-25 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies, and followed with a 1-1 record in conference play. The board’s decision to move ahead follows growing internal concerns about the coaching transition and the financial implications.

For LSU’s football program, the next hiring decision may determine the state of a team years from now with high expectations and a demanding fan base
