Let's face it: sometimes you just want to sit back, laugh, and let someone else handle the drama of life. But, what happens when your recurring payment is running late on a streamer, or you just want to watch something funny quickly without having to cash out monthly fees and have an obligation?

Thanks to the rise of ad-supported streaming, you don't need a Netflix or Hulu subscription to get your comedy fix these days. Platforms like The Roku Channel, Tubi, and Pluto TV are goldmines of excellent content waiting to be discovered by you. From classic sitcoms to modern belly-laughing hits, here are the best comedy shows that are free to stream right now.

1 'The Drew Carey Show' (1995–2004)

The Drew Carey Show was a highly popular sitcom that lasted nearly a decade and consistently drew in a large audience; many of its stars are well-known comedians of today, and it was a platform for soon-to-be-big guest stars, too. Drew Carey was the man of the hour, though, and he and his gang of quirky coworkers deliver some of the most relatable '90s workplace comedy you'll ever watch; from absurd office antics to everyday life struggles, The Drew Carey Show is a reminder that daily life can be funny and entertaining, and that life can surely imitate art in those respects.

The Drew Carey Show follows Carey portraying a fictionalized version of himself, a sort of "everyman," as he himself described it. Drew works at a department store and is surrounded by friends and colleagues he has adventures with all the time. Some of the recurring stars across the series include Kevin Pollack, Craig Ferguson, Kaitlin Olson, and Kate Walsh. Walsh portrays Drew's girlfriend, and Pollack his enigmatic boss. It's a funny workplace sitcom that defined a huge portion of the 1990s.

2 'Becker' (1998–2004)

Becker is like a mix of Ted Lasso, before Jason Sudeikis charmed the world with his quirkiness, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, before Larry David was perpetually annoyed by everything. Ted Danson steps into the role of Dr. John Becker, who is grumpy and sarcastic, but ultimately lovable and charming; he's a doctor who always tells it like it is. Becker's mix of biting humor and heart makes it a surprisingly enduring comedy; if you're interested in something so essentially cusp-of-the-millenium-coded, this is it.

Becker follows Dr. John Becker (Danson), an earnest and hardworking doctor, and his daily adventures and events. Becker often visits his favorite diner and talks about things that bother him, hitting a nerve with viewers very often. Danson and his delivery are one reason the show endured for six years, but the relatable situations and thought comedy drew fans instantly. You can watch Becker on Pluto TV.

3 'Mama's Family' (1983–1990)

Classic TV doesn't get funnier or much more wholesome than the sitcom Mama's Family. With its mix of family antics, Southern charm, and unapologetic characters and gags, this show is pure comfort comedy and a fun throwback to the 1980s. You thought Stranger Things was evoking the era? Mama's Family has all the good and bad the decade offered—from vibrant home wallpapers and outfits to massive hair and outdated makeup, you name it. The show is a spin-off of The Carol Burnett Show, where the character "Mama" Thelma Harper was a recurring character; the show's creator convinced actress Vicki Lawrence to portray Mama in her own show, and the rest is history.

Mama's Family is set in the fictional Raytown, Missouri, where the Harper family lives. The matriarch is "Mama" Thelma, and she's a snappy and often short-fused woman. The show follows her, her family, friends, and neighbors, documenting their lives and adventures; this is true sitcom nature, fun and fun-loving, with loads of signature running gags. Fans of old-school shows are free to enjoy Mama's Family on Pluto TV.

4 '2 Broke Girls' (2011–2017)

What better way to spend your free time than with the modern classic that is 2 Broke Girls. Quirky, sassy, fast-paced and fast-tongued, 2 Broke Girls made history for being a pretty racy sitcom in the world of fairly one-dimensional shows. Still, it also follows the conventions of the genre pretty well, respecting and honoring the single-camera moments and laugh tracks. Creators of 2 Broke Girls are Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City), and the show boasts the signature writing and comedy style of both. Kat Dennings also became a global sensation due to this show, and many people still fondly remember her as the sassy waitress Max.

2 Broke Girls follows Max (Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) who work as waitresses in Brooklyn, New York, wishing to save money and open their own cake shop. The show depicts their friendship, ambition, and often hilarious bad luck as they go through different adventures in each episode. Though the show polarized critics and audiences, 2 Broke Girls is still a guilty pleasure with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

5 'The Neighborhood' (2018–)

The Neighborhood is an ongoing sitcom that is about to end with its currently airing eighth season. Interestingly, seven seasons are available to watch for free on The Roku Channel, and you can immerse yourself in a unique, if not slightly stereotypical family comedy. Despite mixed reviews upon premiering, The Neighborhood is often a warm, witty, and touching series that successfully balances laugh tracks with heartfelt moments. Max Greenfield and Cedric the Entertainer head the show as two polar opposites who become fast friends.

The Neighborhood follows a friendly and nice Midwestern guy, Dave Johnson (Greenfield), who moves into a predominantly black neighborhood in Los Angeles with his wife and son. They're welcomed by the locals and slowly warm up to each other while going through the ups and downs of life and learning from each other. It's fun, helps the time pass, and boasts a great cast with some awesome chemistry and back and forth.

6 'Good Times' (1974–1979)

Good Times is a fairly unknown series today, but a classic of 1970s television and sitcom culture. It's the first majorly Black family sitcom on American television and a spin-off of Maude, Bea Arthur's contemporary family comedy. Good Times is funny, heartwarming, and occasionally poignant, and it often covers serious topics, from gang warfare and racism to poverty and unemployment; with political and social undertones overlaid with funny jokes, this sitcom is a perfect time capsule into the 1970s.

Good Times follows the Evans family navigating life in Chicago's South Side. The family consists of parents Florida and James (Esther Rolle and John Amos), and their three children, teenagers JJ (Jimmie Walker) and Thelma (Bern Nadette Stanis), and 11-year-old Michael (Ralph Carter). The family seemingly resides in the Cabrini-Green homes in Chicago, and the show follows their lives and adventures there, including personal and interpersonal development. Good Times is a comedy that never feels dated, and with the memorable and often surprisingly timely jokes, it also stays with you.

7 'The Addams Family' (1964–1966)

If you're up for some timeless classics, check out The Addams Family on The Roku Channel. Creepy, kooky, and lovable, the original Addams Family series is canon in the sitcom world and a show that is a must-see both for fans of sitcoms and the Addams Family franchise. Whether it's all the scenes showing Gomez's unbridled passion or Uncle Fester's dangerous antics, The Addams Family is a masterclass in quirky comedy and one that commands attention from start to finish.

The Addams Family was the first show of the franchise, based on Charles Addams' cartoons that were published in The New Yorker. It follows the members of the Addams Family: Gomez (John Astin), the wealthy and passionate retired lawyer; Morticia (Carolyn Jones), a macabre housewife; their children, Wednesday (Lisa Loring) and Pugsley (Ken Weatherwax), who often play dangerously; Morticia's dynamite-loving uncle, Fester (Jackie Coogan), and Grandmama (Blossom Rock), Gomez's witchy mother. They live in a mansion and have macabre interests that "normal" people find bizarre, and are a representation of all the unusual and out-of-the-mold characters in the media and real life.

8 'Everybody Hates Chris' (2005–2009)

If you haven't seen Chris Rock's semi-autobiographical sitcom, it's time to do so on Tubi. Everybody Hates Chris is narrated by Rock himself, and it's a smart and hilarious look at growing up in Brooklyn, complete with whacky and over-the-top neighbors, a chaotic school life, and a family that somehow makes it all work. Chris is played by the young Tyler James Williams, who became a star because of this show; many fans today know him from Abbott Elementary, but for anyone who grew up during the 2000s, Williams is still Chris.

Everybody Hates Chris follows parts of Chris Rock's upbringing, and it's set in the 1980s, when he lived with his family in Brooklyn. Chris' father, Julius (Terry Crews), is a hardworking penny-pincher; his mother, Rochelle (Tichina Arnold), is temperamental; and his older brother Drew is athletic and popular in school, while his little sister Tonya is their dad's favorite and always on Chris' case. As the middle child and the apparent black sheep in the family, we follow Chris' growing up, and all the adventures and misadventures. It's a must-watch sitcom that easily defined the 2000s.

9 'Looney Tunes' (1930–)

Sometimes, you just need pure, unfiltered cartoon chaos, and it's exactly what Looney Tunes delivers on Tubi. This classic collection of short cartoon stories features slapstick moments, hilarious puns, and timeless animated hijinks that prove comedy doesn't always need humans to be hilarious. Looney Tunes is a staple of animation and comedy alike, and this series has been surprisingly popular on Tubi since the streamer decided to make it free. It seems like Looney Tunes will never go out of fashion, especially more so when it's not behind a paywall.

Looney Tunes is a collection of short stories and adventures of various characters, mainly humanoid animals. We all know them—Bugs Bunny, the sassy rabbit; Daffy Duck, the brash black duck; Wile E. Coyote, the scheming coyote; Porky Pig, the clumsy, stuttering pig; and many other side characters that either come as antagonists or complementary characters to these leads. For some animated fun, nostalgia, and great laughs, it doesn't get better than getting cozy after a long day and telling your friends not to call because you're busy watching Looney Tunes.
