Few Marvel quotes have stood the test of time or become as legendary as one first published 63 years ago. A powerful medium of storytelling that will always deserve more credit than it gets, comic books are full of powerful lines of text paired with captivating visuals, yet one Spider-Man quote is easily one of the most iconic.
Inspiring multiple decades of heroism and responsibility, Spider-Man's most popular catchphrase remains the single most recognizable sentence in Marvel history (and nothing else has really ever come close).
No Comic Book Line Will Ever Beat Spider-Man's "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility"

First appearing in 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man’s famous motto is one of the most important lessons to ever be told from Marvel Comics.
Depicted on the final panel of the Webslinger's first appearance as a piece of narration following Peter Parker's failure to save his uncle, the line would eventually be attributed to Uncle Ben himself, a sage piece of wisdom Spider-Man would come to center his entire superhero career around.
Marvel has produced plenty of excellent and memorable quotes. The MCU's “I can do this all day” has long been a defining line from Captain America. "Hulk Smash!" is also a big favorite, right alongside Wolverine's "I'm the best there is at what I do, and what I do isn't very nice."
However, none carry the same heft of moral weight we get with Spider-Man’s motto. It's a mission statement not only for Peter alone, but one that could easily be taken on by any hero in the Marvel Universe as a key piece of inspiration. We are called to greater responsibilities, the more it is within our power to do good.
Naturally, this quote has transcended the comics, permeating every version and medium featuring Spider-Man we've seen since. It really doesn't matter how Marvel has evolved since 1962. The motto remains at the heart of Spider-Man's character, becoming a key reason why he's so popular to begin with.

To be fair, the idea of greater responsibility going hand in hand with greater power very much precedes Spider-Man and his debut in 1962. Naturally, versions of the idea have existed long before Marvel Comics. The Book of Luke included a similar teaching in The Bible: “To whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48).
Comparable sentiments were shared during the French Revolution: "A great responsibility is the inseparable result of a great power." Likewise, Winston Churchill used a similar phrase when discussing political responsibility and the US's lack of involvement in WWII (at the time): "The price of greatness is responsibility."
In spite of all these aforementioned versions, there's no doubt that Spider-Man is the one who made the quote so legendary across the globe, a key pop culture landmark in the modern era. As one of the most well-known superheroes in the world, alongside the likes of Superman and Batman, Spider-Man’s popularity has helped cement the line into the ongoing public consciousness and cultural zeitgeist.
Over the last six decades, the mantra became inseparable from Peter Parker's identity, both with and without his mask as Spider-Man. It has shaped how fans have interpreted the hero’s choices and failures across countless stories, a guiding principle for the character himself and for Marvel fans to be inspired when it comes to the power in their own lives.
Even in the countless reinterpretations of the character we've seen with every new author and even new realities thanks to the multiverse, the motto's legacy has never really diminished, so long as the depicted Spider-Man in question is dedicated to doing good and being a hero. Most new versions of Spider-Man continue to reaffirm the importance of power and responsibility.
Even The MCU Knows How Important Spider-Man's Motto Is

When Marvel Studios introduced Tom Holland's Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, they initially avoided using the iconic line so directly. Peter instead told Tony, “When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen… they happen because of you.” It was a clear thematic nod...but not the quote itself.
It's been assumed that Marvel Studios likely avoided repeating Uncle Ben’s death and the initial sharing of his classic motto to better distinguish the MCU's Spider-Man version from past cinematic versions seen in Raimi’s trilogy or the movies starring Andrew Garfield.
However, it became clear that the exact phrase was too important to leave out indefinitely. Sure enough, the MCU fully embraced the line in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Aunt May being the one to deliver the classic Spider-Man motto moments before her death.
The decision reconnected Tom Holland’s Peter to the heart of the Spider-Man mythos, made even better as May said it exactly how it was written in Amazing Fantasy #15: "With great power, there must also come great responsibility."
Combined with the inclusion of Tobey Maguire and Garfield's past versions of Spider-Man, it truly felt like the moment that Tom Holland was ready to evolve and embrace his life as Spider-Man like never before in the MCU.
Even in a franchise filled with iconic lines and quotes, none carry the same cultural gravity as Spider-Man's motto, and the MCU’s return to the phrase proved its enduring relevance after six decades of storytelling. The story of Spider-Man truly cannot be told without it.
