I did not expect this budget PS5 headset to get any cheaper, but that's exactly what it did

The Turtle Beach Atlas 200 just cemented itself as the best budget PS5 headset I've tested all year now that it's under $50 for the very first time.

Of all the PS5 headsets I suspected to see on sale throughout the holidays, the Turtle Beach Atlas 200 was not one of them. The officially licensed pair of cups has barely been on the online shelves for three months, and its $59.99 MSRP was so cheap to start with, so I thought it'd be at least 2026 before we'd see any significant savings.

Yet, the Atlas 200 received its first-ever discount during Black Friday, taking its full price down to $49.99 at Amazon, where it still remains today. A $10 saving doesn't sound that dramatic at first, but it feels pretty significant when it's $10 off one of the best PS5 headsets I've tested all year, which shares the sound quality of rivals well past the $100 mark. If you need a cheap headset for your PS5 and don't want to be stuck with a cheap sound, the Atlas 200 is worth every dollar.

Should you buy the Turtle Beach Atlas 200?

This is a wired headset, so if you cannot stand being at the mercy of cables, even a 4ft-er, this is not the pair for you. I get it, as I very much prefer hooking up to my Sony pixel-pusher via a 2.4GHz wireless connection, as I do via the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5 Wireless. That being said, the sound quality of this Turtle Beach pair is pretty much on par with SteelSeries' mid-range, wireless marvel.

The Atlas 200 is equipped with 50mm Nanoclear audio drivers, which allow the wired pair to have a really warm and balanced sound. During my Atlas 200 review, I tested the headset while playing horror games like Still Wakes the Deep, and stated that it made the creaky oil rig and the terrifying mutters of the monsters lurking sound fantastic, and I still stand by that.

The larger 50mm size of the drivers means there's more surface area for the sound to resonate, so any and all bass-heavy frequencies, whether it was in Still Wakes the Deep or online games like Marvel Rivals, sound sublime and distortion-free - just the way I like it.

It's not just the sound that I admire about the Atlas 200, but the ear cups are super comfortable to boot. Whenever I can't be bothered to ensure I've charged my current wireless headset of choice, I instead pop the Atlas 200 into the 3.5 headphone jack and can't help but grin as I feel the soft, fabric coating of the cups on my ears. It also helps that the cups are round enough to fit around even my massive, Dumbo-like ears, so while there's no noise-canceling, the sound feels isolated and perfectly loud.

The main stickler I have with this headset is its microphone. If you're after a less than $100 PS5 headset specifically for online gaming, I'd much prefer to direct you towards something like the Razer Barracuda X instead. The Atlas 200 gives an early 00s PC mic quality to your speaking, which your friends won't want to be subject to for multiple hours on end.

However, if you prefer single-player experiences with the odd match of Fortnite without voice chat, this wired pair is worth its current $49.99 deal price. Honestly, it's worth its full price too, so if you're coming to this article late and the deal is already gone, I'd still recommend you add it to your Sony gaming setup.

Ever since I first held a NES controller in my hand I've been obsessed with gaming, and the hardware it runs on. I could hook up a NES and SNES to a telly, without instructions, before I could walk. Even now, nothing is more exciting then taking a console, or handheld, out the box for the first time and setting it up. This obsession transformed into a love of games and game music, which lead to my music degree and dream of becoming the Scottish Nobuo Uematsu. After sharing my love of games through music, I began to share my love through words on sites like TechRadar and iMore. This lead to becoming a Hardware staff writer for PCGamesN, and later the Senior Tech Writer for Dexerto, covering all things Steam Deck, PlayStation and Nintendo. With that experience, I was able to level up as Hardware Editor for GamesRadar+, where I'm still just as Nintendo, PlayStation and gaming tech obsessed as ever.
