Marvel Comics has a new Watcher, replacing the classic version of Uatu in the Ultimate Universe. But while someone has to watch the Marvel Universe and safeguard it on a cosmic level, the new Watcher is a major villain who MCU fans won't believe earned this promotion.
Ultron Just Became the New Watcher
ultron as the new watcher
In today's Ultimate Universe: Two Years In, Ultron becomes the new Watcher, even taking the name 'Uatu.' The comic sees the robot - full codename Ultron-82 - recruited by the Guardians of the Galaxy, who are gathering an army to oppose the villainous Maker.
Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1 is by Alex Paknadel, Deniz Camp, Javier Pulido, Francesco Manna, Pat Boutin, Lee Ferguson, Phil Noto, Federico Blee, GURU-eFX, Erick Arciniega, Javier Pulido and Travis Lanham.

However, before joining the hero team, Ultron chooses to study humanity, believing that the Maker's tampering with the timestream may have echoed back, disturbing the natural order and introducing a savagery and evil to human nature. Ultron's study begins in the prehistoric era, with the robot witnessing countless civilizations rise and fall.
Rejoining the team after relative millennia of study, Ultron now sports a Watcher-like cloak and the name 'Uatu' - a corruption of its numeric codename U-82 (and the name of Marvel's mainstream Watcher.)
Our Take on Ultron's Heroic Transformation
ultron as the new watcher 3
After studying humanity, Ultron reaches the dark conclusion that the Maker has done nothing to the past. Human nature is inherently combative, and nothing lasts forever. The advanced robot recommends that the Guardians stop fighting for a perfect, utopian future, instead working to save whatever they can, wherever they can.
ultron as the new watcher 2
The original Uatu has long been depicted as a godlike being with near-omnipotent powers. While Ultron is certainly powerful, it's interesting to see a far more physical version of the Watcher - a being who witnesses human history not from a cosmic distance, but by sitting and watching history play out around her, being totally transformed by the experience.
This version of Ultron is from the 61st Century, explaining why the megalomaniacal robot has become a hero. Multiple versions of Marvel's future suggest that, with enough time, Ultron will evolve, becoming more empathetic and heroic. U-82 suggests that Ultron can eventually become a godlike force for good.
the ultimate guardians of the galaxy change their philosophy
Two Years In sees the Guardians of the Galaxy recruit multiple incredibly powerful heroes to battle the Maker in the upcoming Ultimate Endgame (see our coverage of the new Ultimate Daredevil here.) However, even among such a mighty team, Ultron/Uatu might be the most vital, not just increasing the Guardians' power, but changing their entire philosophy of heroism as the Ultimate Universe enters its endgame.
Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
