Jason Statham’s grittiest action movie yet has become one of his biggest hits on streaming, as the English star continues to wow audiences. Earlier this year, Statham collaborated with David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Michael Peña (Landman) for A Working Man, his latest bone-crunching flick following a former special ops soldier who goes back out into the field when someone close to him is kidnapped. A Working Man is currently streaming on both Prime Video and Amazon MGM+ in America, where it’s become one of the most popular movies, including smashing into the top spot on Prime.
A Working Man wasn't instantly beloved by reviewers upon its premiere earlier this year, leading to a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score, but, as many Statham action hits often do, it was a success with audience. It holds a Verified Hot 87% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, and it’s become essential viewing for Statham fans. A Working Man earned just enough at the box office to avoid being labeled a flop, but it wasn’t a huge success by any means, as tt grossed $88 million against a $40 million budget. So, it washed its face and was a moderate success.
A Working Man is based on the book Levon’s Trade by Chuck Dixon, and David Ayer wrote and directed the film. Action movie legend and Statham's Expendables co-star Sylvester Stallone also worked with Ayer and is credited as a co-screenwriter. The film was originally titled Levon’s Trade before it shifted to A Working Man a few months before release. Statham and Ayer previously worked together on The Beekeeper, and Statham and Stallone have a long history of working together on The Expendables franchise and other projects like Homefront.
Is 'A Working Man' Worth Seeing?
It's Statham, so it's going to be watchable. Collider labelled it a "badass dad movie" in our review:
Regardless, A Working Man still has more than enough moments that will keep your attention just enough to enjoy yourself. There's also an extra layer of sweetness in the scenes between Levon and his daughter, as well as with Jenny. Characters that could have simply just been there just to add an extra layer of stakes, but actually give the movie a bit more heart than even The Beekeeper had.
With two movies under their belt, Statham and Ayer have proved to be the perfect match for delivering entertaining and simple action flicks to the big screen. While it's already been announced that Ayer won't be back for The Beekeeper 2 (although that sequel seems to be in safe hands with Timo Tjahjanto), I can't help but clamor for more collaborations between Statham and Ayer. They are at their best when working together.
A Working Man is on Prime now.
