It is a left-field thought.

The Dallas Cowboys are perhaps one of the most in-form teams in football, with both sides of the ball playing key roles in beating the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in consecutive weeks.

Defensively is where the headlines are, though.

After being one of the worst units in football, the trade for Quinnen Williams, along with Kenny Clark (got in the Micah trade), coupled with the returns of DeMarvion Overshown, Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker, and Shavon Revel Jr. from injury, Matt Eberflus' unit is on fire.

Needing to nearly run the table to secure playoff football, the Cowboys know their margin for error is slim.

And for ESPN's Todd Archer in naming an X-factor for the Cowboys in the season's closing stretch, he's picked corner Trevon Diggs.

"Diggs hasn't played since mid-October, but he was designated for return from injured reserve Sunday," Archer wrote. "He was not playing at his Pro Bowl level from 2022 before going on IR, but perhaps he can find that form in a Cowboys defense that has improved with the additions of Quinnen Williams, DeMarvion Overshown, Shavon Revel Jr. and Logan Wilson. Diggs would provide another playmaker as the Cowboys fight for a playoff spot."

Can Diggs be Dallas' x-factor?

I think most of Cowboys Nation would settle for Diggs being a solid player in truth.

Of course, Trevon returning and grabbing interceptions, playing sticky in coverage, and locking down one side of the field is a dream scenario, but just being serviceable, that's what fans want.

With DaRon Bland and Revel Jr. both impressing in recent weeks, we can now add Diggs to the rotation (maybe against Detroit), which will further strengthen Dallas' secondary.

As far as an X Factor? I'm not there with Trevon, but he could be a very useful addition, particularly if he shows that he is anything like the All-Pro he has shown himself to be at times.

And he might be the final piece of the defensive puzzle as Dallas dreams of playoff football.
