For months, Alex Golesh recruited DeShawn Spencer like he was the most important offensive piece on his board.

Because he was.

Before Spencer ever went public with a commitment to Duke, the dynamic Saraland (Ala.) playmaker was actually a silent commit to USF. Golesh and his staff had an announcement date locked in. Spencer was prepared to join the Bulls.

Then he delayed. He took more time. And ultimately, he committed to Duke instead.

But Golesh never backed off.

“They were pushing me to flip during the season,” Spencer told Rivals. “USF never gave up. The people felt very genuine at USF, especially Coach Golesh. They were always recruiting me and wanting me to visit.”

That foundation, months of relationship-building, consistency, and genuine connection, became the difference in this decision.

Spencer took a visit to Auburn. Hours later, on Sunday, Golesh was officially named the new head coach on the Plains.

The moment Golesh got the job, he went right back to the player he always wanted most.

And this time, he landed him.

“I am going to Auburn. Coach Golesh has always made me feel at home around him, and I have always liked Auburn.”

The fit works on every level for the in-state standout.

“Auburn is close to home and the atmosphere is one of the best,” Spencer said. “Going to Auburn, I get a chance to play for a great coach, a school in my home state, and around people I feel comfortable with.”
