News came down on Tuesday afternoon that had been expected for quite some time in Eugene.
Oregon Ducks defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is moving on from Eugene and beginning his head coaching career. It's the California Golden Bears who are hiring Lupoi after parting ways with long-time head coach Justin Wilcox earlier this month. Lupoi, a California alum, was among the top candidates for the job, and the two sides moved quickly in getting a deal done.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementLupoi was one of the first hires for Lanning when he took over as the head coach in Eugene, and he has progressively improved as the defensive play-caller for the Ducks. Oregon has one of the best defenses in the nation this year, ranking No. 8 in scoring defense (15.0 ppg), and No. 2 in total defense (252.3 ypg).
While it's a bummer to see Lupoi leave Oregon, many fans were happy that he gets this opportunity to take over his own team. Here's how fans reacted on social media on Monday afternoon:
