This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.Iconic Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh are battling it out in a shocking new trailer for the horror film The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie. Independent filmmakers creating horror remakes of classic characters are all the rage right now. The Twisted Childhood Universe is one of the most well-known examples, with films like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare and Bambi: The Reckoning. There have also been Mickey Mouse horror films, including The Mouse Trap and Screamboat.
Now two of those lovable cartoon animals, Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh, will be going head-to-head in a new horror remake called The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie, and the first trailer has now been released (via BritFlicks).
The film will center on a group of friends who have unresolved trauma from their past. When they revisit their old school in a creepy forest, horror versions of Mickey and Winnie appear to haunt the friends' psyche. Dark Mickey creates chaos and is a master at manipulation, while Dark Winnie is all about destruction.
At one point in the trailer, one of the characters says, "This place is evil. It all feels connected," as she starts to put the puzzle pieces together of the movie's mystery and realizes Dark Mickey and Dark Winnie's rein of terror is connected to her trauma. "They're turning what we love into nightmares," she adds.
The trailer also shows off the villains themselves, covered in blood and ready to wreak havoc on the protagonists' lives.
As the title The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie appears on the screen, the iconic Mickey Mouse whistle from Steamboat Willie plays in the background.
Check out the Mickey vs. Winnie trailer below:
The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie cast includes Daniel Wilkinson, Givanni Gotay and Fayna Sanchez, with director Glenn Douglas Packard co-writing the script with Rachel Carter.
Audiences are used to seeing Mickey Mouse and Winnie-the-Pooh in family-friendly shows and movies from Disney. However, versions of these characters, like Steamboat Willie's Mickey, are now in the public domain, which means anyone can create their own books, shows, movies or plays.
Independent filmmakers have really leaned into the horror genre when reimagining classic cartoons in their public domain projects.
The most popular public domain property at the moment is The Wizard of Oz. Author Gregory Maguire wrote the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, based on the beloved L. Frank Baum books. The story was transformed for the Broadway stage as the musical Wicked, which has now been adapted into a two-part cinematic experience, with Wicked: For Good now in theaters.
When it comes to Disney, though, horror remakes seem to be the name of the game, with The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie being the latest independent horror film to be teased. A release date hasn't been announced yet, but Untouchables Entertainment plans to release it sometime in 2026.
More to come...
