ABB has finalised its purchase of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics division in Spain from Siemens Gamesa.
The move follows the initial announcement made in December last year. The financial details of the transaction have not been made public.
For the financial year ending 30 September 2025 (FY25), the acquired business generated annual revenues of around €145m ($168.4m).
The acquisition includes a range of products such as wind converters for doubly fed induction generators, battery energy storage systems for industrial use, and inverters for utility-scale solar projects.
Nearly 400 employees will join ABB as part of the deal, including primary personnel based in China, India, Australia, and the US.
The transaction also includes two converter manufacturing facilities located in Valencia and Madrid in Spain.
ABB renewable power business line manager Motion High Power Daniel Gerber said: “By combining ABB’s global reach and Gamesa Electric’s portfolio and expertise, the company is well-positioned to capture growing demand and accelerate renewable energy adoption worldwide.”
Additionally, ABB has signed a supply and services agreement with Siemens Gamesa.
With this acquisition, ABB’s serviceable installed base of wind converters is said to increase by about 46GW.
Gamesa Electric brings more than four decades of experience in power electronics, particularly in solar and renewable energy applications.
According to the International Energy Agency’s Renewables 2025 report, electricity generation from renewable sources is projected to rise by 60%, from 9,900TWh last year to 16,200TWh by 2030.
Renewables are also reportedly set to overtake coal as the leading source of global electricity generation by the end of this year or by mid-2026, depending on hydropower output.
Solar photovoltaic is expected to contribute more than half of this growth, with wind energy accounting for around 30%.
ABB, with a workforce exceeding 110,000 employees worldwide, is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.
"ABB concludes purchase of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics unit" was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
