By Rowan Fisher-ShottonShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberJust two weeks after Virginia Tech hired James Franklin, a major recruiting update has sent ripples through Blacksburg.
Cole Bergeron, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback from Lafayette, Louisiana, has decommitted from Virginia Tech, Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett reported Monday.
The St. Thomas More passer earned an offer from Virginia Tech in June, visited, and pledged on August 7.
247Sports lists him as a four-star recruit, the 12th-ranked prospect in Louisiana and 20th-ranked QB in the country for the 2026 class.
Bergeron also received offers from UCLA, Indiana, Colorado, Georgia Tech, and Minnesota, to whom he took an official visit on November 9.
He was the lone quarterback commit for Virginia Tech’s 2026 class.

Virginia Tech dismissed Brent Pry on September 14 after a 0-3 start to the 2025 college football season.
Franklin was formally announced by the university on November 17 and arrives with a 128-60 overall record across 12 seasons at Penn State, and three at Vanderbilt, a 2024 College Football Playoff semifinals appearance, and a 2016 Big Ten championship.
The hire comes with a significant financial commitment, as Franklin signed a five-year, $41.75 million deal that tops $13 million in 2030.

A decommit at this stage in the cycle signals that commitments made under the previous coaching staff are not guaranteed to hold through a major staff overhaul, even at quarterback.
Practically, it forces Franklin’s staff to make a decision: either re-engage Bergeron, pivot to other prep targets, or accelerate portal QB searches.
Senior signal caller Kyron Drones led the way for the Hokies in 2025, throwing for 1,919 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, along with 644 rushing yards and nine rushing TDs.
Drones still has another year of eligibility left, but only time will tell whether he wants to spend that in Blacksburg.
