A Man Called Otto has become a streaming success three years later. The movie, which debuted in December 2022, is a remake of the Oscar-nominated 2015 Swedish movie A Man Called Ove. The movie, which follows a grouchy widower becoming unlikely friends with his new neighbors, was adapted from the novel of the same name by Fredrik Backman.
The Man Called Otto cast includes Tom Hanks (in the title role), his son Truman Hanks (as Young Otto), Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, Mike Birbiglia, and The Lincoln Lawyer star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Although the remake was not nominated for any Oscars, it grossed $113 million worldwide, outgrossing notable 2022 movies including Halloween Ends and Moonfall.
Now, per FlixPatrol, A Man Called Otto is surging on Netflix worldwide. In spite of the fact that the movie is not available on the platform in the United States, it is No. 7 on the website's proprietary global chart for the streaming service.
While it has fallen behind some contemporary Netflix originals such as Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein (No. 3), the romantic comedy Champagne Problems (No. 1), and the holiday movie A Merry Little Ex-Mas (No. 6), A Man Called Otto has outpaced Netflix's most-watched movie in history, the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters (No. 10), during that movie's 13th week on the platform.
FlixPatrol also shows that 2022's A Man Called Otto is No. 1 in 12 individual territories, namely Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Salvador, and Uruguay.
It makes sense that the Tom Hanks movie would continue to connect with audiences across the world, even though several years have passed since its debut. Although the movie had more mixed reactions from critics, who gave it a score of 70% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, audiences had much more glowing reviews.
More than 5,000 verified ticket buyers have shared their opinions on the movie on Rotten Tomatoes, earning A Man Called Otto a near-perfect, Verified Hot, Popcornmeter score of 97%. Overall, viewers have praised the movie's heartwarming storyline and Tom Hanks' performance in the title role, which are two factors that still seem to be strongly appealing to audiences in 2025.
This sustained enthusiasm explains why A Man Called Otto has still managed to make an impression on Netflix's global Top 10 in spite of its availability seeming to be primarily limited to South America instead of every territory with Netflix access, which is the standard level of availability for Netflix originals.
