Almost all major mobile streaming apps let you cast content to Chromecast, Google TV, or any Cast-compatible streaming device for a big-screen viewing experience. However, in a move that's bound to frustrate users, Netflix is ending Cast support for its mobile app.

Netflix silently updated its support page to reflect that it will no longer support casting shows from mobile to Cast-compatible TVs and streaming services. Instead, it points users to use the native Netflix apps on such devices. This is irrespective of which plan you are subscribed to.

Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix.

The issue was first noticed by many Redditors who were frustrated with the missing Cast button in the Netflix app on their devices (via The Verge).

The option is still available on older Chromecast and Google Cast-compatible devices. But there's no clear cut off here, and it's unclear why Netflix is forcing users of newer streaming devices to use its app instead of the casting option.

It seems Netflix wants to limit casting to Chromecasts and older TVs that do not have a native Netflix app. On devices where its app is available, the company is pushing users to launch it instead.

Netflix previously did not allow casting from mobile to TVs for users on its ad-supported tier. But this change is different; it's killing casting support entirely for newer devices. The move is bound to frustrate many Netflix users, as the company is removing the feature altogether on newer devices instead of limiting it by plan.

No AirPlay, and now no Casting either

Netflix already killed AirPlay support on its mobile app back in 2019. So, it's evidently clear that the company wants to push users towards using its native app instead on all possible platforms.

From a viewing experience, this move will help the company provide a more stable playback, thanks to granular control over bitrate adjustment and use of AV1 codec. More importantly, Netflix can implement much stronger DRM and gain more detailed analytics on user behavior.
