Weapons director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot is really happening, and there are set photos to prove it.

New images from the highly-anticipated survival horror movie’s Prague locations show a city in a state of devastation after some kind of horrific event (via V Arno/X and The Prague Reporter), while offering a couple of clues as to the place and time of year in which the film is set. The photos confirm the setting as Raccoon City, the zombie-beset town featured in the original Resident Evil video games.

There have already been seven Resident Evil movies, six in the original series starring Milla Jovovich, and one ill-fated reboot released in 2021.

No actors are to be seen in any of the new images from Barbarian director Cregger's latest attempt at restarting the horror franchise. All the photos show Prague streets that have been meticulously transformed into scenes of carnage, including wrecked and burned cars. There is snow on the street and on the vehicles, teasing a winter setting.

A few images show the snow and slush on the street turned red with blood, a hint that something truly horrifying is taking place.

One image shows a Sheriff’s SUV, caked in snow, and emblazoned with the words “Martin County," sporting a Colorado license plate. Raccoon City’s exact geographical location is not mentioned in the original Resident Evil video game series, but it appears Cregger’s movie will take place in a specific real-world locale, as reports from the Prague set mention other vehicles seen there with Colorado plates.

Prominently featured in the handful of new set photos is a sheltered bus stop, with a glass-enclosed map inside showing Raccoon City’s layout, as well as a subway chart, and what looks to be a subway schedule.

As revealed by The Prague Reporter, several of the city’s streets were shut down for shooting, including a nighttime shoot, with a notice posted warning residents of upcoming activity, while assuring them that curfews would be respected:

During filming, Jirsíkova and Malého Streets will be artificially covered with snow and cleared of parked cars. The filming will involve gunfire, fast driving, and other action sequences. We understand this may be disturbing, so these scenes will be carried out with respect for nighttime quiet hours.

The report also noted some “high-speed vehicle stunts” being filmed, and mentioned that a well-known local restaurant had been transformed into an establishment called the Oak Street Diner.

When interviewed back in September about his take on Resident Evil, director Cregger teased an experience that will satisfy fans of the games, while telling a story that is not 100% beholden to those same games (via EW):

It's an entirely original story. When you watch it, you'll be like, 'This is very Zach.' It's just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don't think fans of the games are gonna be bummed.

When speaking about what source material is directly influencing his version of Resident Evil, Cregger claimed he’s never seen any of the previous movies in the franchise (via Double Toasted), but did say he’s long been a fan of the games, and proclaimed his movie "probably lives more in the world of [Resident Evil] 2 and 3, but I'd say it adheres more to the tone of 4."

Resident Evil’s cast has been confirmed to include Austin Abrams (Weapons), Paul Walter Hauser (Cobra Kai), Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective), and Johnno Wilson (I Love That For You).

Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot is set for release on September 18, 2026.

However, some might worry that lacking familiarity with the film series could result in missing elements that worked well previously. Ultimately, it depends on how well Cregger can balance honoring the source material while putting his own creative stamp on the franchise.
